Eventually you will be able to take rides on Lake Pontchartrain LINK

Some places in NOLA you could land in that thing and actually get shot at like the beaches of Normandy

Awesome boat. They've had it for a while but have just been restoring it right?
Posted on 11/20/16 at 12:30 pm to lighter345
Yeah, for a while. My uncle helped with the restoration, feels like he was doing so for years

You need a LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel) aka Higgins boat to get the actual feel of that, not a PT boat.

Yes, for full D-Day experience.
Made in NOLA, too

My uncle helped with the restoration,
On a side note, used to drink with Higgins' nephew in the late '80's, he was a piece of work.

Holy fricking shite, Longue Carabine made a post without signing it, it's a sign of the end times.

This thread seems like a good place to show off a sterling silver Higgins Boats lapel pin that I found with my metal detector. I don't know its age or the story behind it but it's pretty cool. I will donate it to the D-Day Museum if/when I get back to NO.

That's a really cool piece. You might look at their website if that's something you think you want to part with

Thats cool. And the museum is building a Higgins boat from the original plans.

I have really high hopes for the space the boat will be based I believe now offically called Lakeshore Landing.
This is the same site that the owner of Tipitina's will be building a 5,000 person capacity amphitheater, restaurant, bar, etc.
Having moved away and lived in a major city with multiple amphitheaters pulling in good tours, it's about time NOLA gets one. And on the water nonetheless.

The craziest thing about those boats is how much fuel they consume. I went to the Nimitz museum and they had one powered by 3 Merlin engine so that sucked something like 2000 gallons of fuel per each patrol in one day. That's a ton of fuel for a 75 foot boat.
