We were shooting ar15's and ar10's last summer. One of my friends had dumped his AK into a muddy puddle (on purpose). It was in there for probably an hour. Pulled it out of the water, cleared the breach, shook it a few times to get the water out of the barrel, stuck a fresh mag in it and fired an entire magazine with no jams or misfires.

It is certainly not as accurate as an AR but in dusty, dirty locations where cleaning is not easy I can see why it is so popular.

A side note, when he was shaking the water out it made a God awful rattle like there were bolts loose inside it, he said that was normal.

You could have done the same with one of the AR's. I've dragged M16's and M4's through mud, sand, and literal shite and they ran just fine. They aren't nearly as delicate as the popular opinion/myths make them out to be.
