it's ridiculous we have to go to these shithole countries anyway.

Not even the Chicken Wire...we were totally out there.

Exactly…when we first rolled in 2003 it was “sunsout, guns out”…when we went from heroes to zeros with locals soon after, we were begging, borrowing and stealing armor to put on trucks.

Sometimes I miss those days at Camp Wareagle.

One of my BIL's Purple Hearts was earned on his way out of country. Freaking convoy to Kuwait was hit with IEDs. I don't see how the troops, especially early on, ever trusted ANYONE driving, walking, or standing anywhere near them.

Didn’t make it til 05 by then had “upgraded” to chicken wire and whatever metal could be slapped on

Sir, I believe you missed my point! We didn’t have time to wait, and like it or not some of us were there with a job and mission to complete. So, again, unless you were there, keep your bleeding vagina comments to the political board!

Roadside IED's and car bombs made this a different war. I can't imagine facing that every day.
Which is why a lot of those guys had much worse PTSD than the previous wars (sans Nam). I can remember my squad leader speaking about how when they got back from over there how tense he would be just driving around town in the US. He said it took him a while to stop white knuckling every time he got in his Jeep.

I was in Sadr City for a year, 03-04, and we had soft sides. Most of the time we took the tarps off the back and the doors off the cab so we could see better.

I’m not blaming soldiers for doing their jobs in wartime. I believe Americans served honorably in these wars.
I’m blaming politicians for starting wars that didn’t need to be fought.
