Did he go to far? It's easy to say yes he did go to far, just because, as a guy, it is always taught to never hit a girl, without a girl hitting the shite out of you.. But I can understand his reaction.

I dunno - reminds me of that spring break video where that chick wailed on that drunk dude up and down the hallway before he finally just went into his room. she landed about 15 "haymakers" but he never even lost his balance.
I would never hit a woman closed fisted in the face - much easier to just neutralize her instead.

Normally I would say that yes, he went too far. That first shot he landed was justified in my opinion. But once he clocked her and she stayed on her feet, he knew he was in for a fight. That chick was tough. His adrenaline and instinct took over. If he doesn't go into battle mode, she beats his arse up.

In HS, this white girl and black dude got into it at PE.
The black dude was cool with everyone, but the white girl was crazy. She would go nuts on people for trivial shite.
When it came type to switch classes, me and a few other kids would sort of meet up to go to our next class. He was one of the people who would meet up with us.
All of a sudden this girl comes running at him "hit me! I dare you! hit me! You scared!". He laughed it off and was trying to ignore her, but she wasn't having it. He kept saying "I am not hitting a girl!".
She was yelling and causing a huge scene. Getting in front of him as he was trying to go to class.
It went on for a few minutes. Then she finally said it "what's wrong you stupid n----. You scared of getting your arse whipped by a girl?". He gives his books to one of the dudes in our class. Threw a punch and that chick dropped liked a bag of sand.
He grabbed his books and walked to the principal's office. The girl stayed down for a few seconds and by the time people went to see how she was doing, she was sitting back up.. With this huge knot on her head still screaming.. "So he hit me and ran away? Just what I thought! He is scared to fight me!".
He got three days, it was probably worth it.. Like I said, you don't hit girls. But there are some situations in which someone will hit a girl.. And I can understand.

I witnessed a guy hitting a chick who wouldn't stop. She threw a drink in his face and he was cool tried to blow it off..People were telling her to drop it..She threw a punch and it hurt the guy more than he expected. He threw a punch right at her nose which exploded with blood...She went down and no one went after the guy..everyone went back to drinking.
