Addiction is a problem. It doesn't matter what it is to which you are addicted.
Addiction is the problem. Lack of self control is the problem. Lack of discipline. Lack of real world purpose is a problem.
Kids don't have self control or purpose in life. Children inherently crave discipline and purpose. Without a strong set of parents to instill discipline and purpose you end up with wildly out of control and unpredictable little shits yearning for a sense of belonging and accomplishment.
Parents and society are failing children at an alarming and increasing rate.
Addiction is the problem. Lack of self control is the problem. Lack of discipline. Lack of real world purpose is a problem.

Amazing how nobody really got addicted to the Atari or Nintendo era video games.
I guess it helped that Dr. Mom and Dr. Dad were around to dish out their prescription of "Turn that shite off and go outside"

How stupid. What about people who want to excel at the game for streaming, esports, or social media content? That is a job. It's the same as someone that practices football everyday. They have to alienate themselves in order to dedicate themselves to the sport. This can be applied to anything. What about school? Are you an addict because you study all the time?
I would argue that anybody that wants to be above average will be an "addict" to the subject.
What's the difference between addiction and dedication? I would say addiction is harmful to the health of the individual.

The problem is at home and within the individual.
So why is everyone so quickly able to support it as a disease?
1. The WHO gets more funding and attention.
2. The physicians get paid better to treat it.
3. The pharmaceutical companies get money to develop drugs to treat it.
4. The insurance companies raise premiums to treat it.
5. The hospitals get paid for inpatient treatment of it.
6. The government raises taxes to deal with the "crisis" of it.
7. The individual and their family get "an excuse" for their poor choices.
Everyone wins in the short term.
Everyone loses in the long term.

Just like almost no one hooping it up in the back yard will make it to the NBA, almost no kid playing games in the rec room will be an Esports star. Kids spending hours a day with that expectation are deluded. Parents allowing them to do it are neglectful.

And those of us that have managed to maintain some modicum of control over our behaviors, and manage to hold down a job and earn money to support ourselves and our families will be the ones paying for all of that. Through taxes and higher insurance premiums.
So glad their is another group that can now officially be worthless and reap the benefits.
Oh, and you've got some slacker employee who spends all his work time playing video games - you better fire his arse today or soon the government won't allow you to fire him because he's got a disability.
Now that I think about companies will probably be required to set up safe gaming spaces for their employees that suffer from this debilitating condition.

Got my first NES and the original Legend of Zelda over Christmas break my Freshman year of HS in 1987. Stayed up for 2 and 1/2 days straight before I passed out (didn't finish it then, but did soon after). I've since logged countless hours with Resident Evil 2, Deus Ex, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, and more recently, Fortnite.
Just celebrated my 25th wedding anniversary, have four wonderful children, and a fun well-paying job.
Don't listen to them. Play those games.

Except they have to learn to do things on the computer. The interest in computers can obviously lead to a lot of good careers. Then there is the whole streaming thing too.

Well, it's valid. The I can't work bc I'm fat, crazy, a drug addict, alcoholic, have panic attacks, can't go out without my pet lobster, so everyone else is going to foot the bill crap is getting out of hand. This little mandate by the WHO,( which is run by whom??) opned the door for video game junkies to be added to that list. It's ridiculous.
