Baw was rocking some full blown Jim Dangles. The extra agility saved an idiot's life. Drove hundreds of miles in Utah a few weeks back, still no idea what their troopers look like. 80 mph and no cops anywhere. I literally can't imagine the odds of one rolling up at that moment.

Why is it always Amtrak trains that hit vehicles? I don't think I'd want to travel by Amtrak because of this.

That was a Frontrunner commuter train, but I'll answer this.

It's because Amtrak and passenger trains in general travel much faster than the freights. The top speed for most mainline passenger trains is 79mph whereas most freight trains top out at around 50 or so.

Less time to react = bigger chance of being hit.

Also, when an Amtrak train hits a car, the only thing that really happens to passengers on board is a delay. Think of it as a car running over a Coke can.

where'd you come up with this?

when you say "50 or so" what is so? like 55 or 60 or 65?

also have you ever been on a train, commuter/passenger or freight for that matter, and hit a vehicle? just curious.

amtrack is just reported more because it involves passengers just in this past week from Beaumont to Livonia there's been a concrete truck and a lumber truck that have been hit that i know of. that's just on one line of rail.

dude even had to hop over some kind of retaining fence too. i dont think i would have been able to react that fast. that guy would have been toast if i had been the cop i'm afraid to say.

he literally had less than a minute from seeing the car and pulling over to COMPLETELY ASSESS the situation and act in time.

frick. that was amazing.

Majority of Class 1 mainlines with relatively simple terrain have speed limits of 79P/55F. Just depends on the railroad's rules for the max freight speed. Passenger trains can't go above 79 unless advanced PTC is installed.

Yes I have actually. I was on Amtrak when we hit a car near Tampa. Didn't feel a damn thing except the brakes slamming on.

ETA: I see that you're a UP baw so correct me if I'm wrong.

In the twitter comments someone mentions the guy on the tracks had some sort of medical condition.

Looks like the fencing was torn up. Perhaps he had a medical problem and ended up driving off the road over the fence up onto the train tracks and got stuck?
