Had several. Tough little pain in the arse dogs but my absolute favorite.

Steroids work amazingly well for them. Just hope it's not IVDD.

We will spend money just surprised on specialist

The first one my sister took to the overnight emergency vet that was part of Pet Smart. They did x-rays and referred her to surgical vet that happened to be just down the road and staffed around the clock. The great thing about that place was that the main vet "specialized", for lack of a better word, in dachshund back issues and surgeries. That's the one that really cost her. That pup was five or six, I think, at the time. They did the surgery first thing the next morning, and everything went well. She lived another seven years or so and walked the whole time.

It is important to note that that pup was dragging it's back legs, had no feeling in the legs (pinched between the toes and had no reaction), and was a no doubter as to diagnosis. It isn't always that way, sometimes it is just a tweak or minor injury.

I’m not sure why people whine about the cost of vets/veterinary specialists. If you don’t want to spend the money, then don’t.

I get the people that say it is just an animal and will only spend minimal money on them. Perfectly legitimate way to look at life.

That being said we have something called "boat calculus" in our house. We enjoy our boat, we spend lots of money boating. The boat has been assigned a rough dollar value per hour of entertainment based on actual costs and depreciation. When we are considering spending money on something we enjoy but are concerned it might have poor ROI we compare it to the boat. Our dogs are one of the things that are almost guaranteed to prevail when boat calculus is applied. As long as we have the money and the vet gives a good prognosis we will spend the money. Everyone's math is different and if well considered is right for them and their family.

Our dachshund had IVDD episode when he was 6. We shelled out 4 grand, surgery was success, and now he’s 14.

Just shelled out more cabbage to get his dang teeth removed haha.

I guess it’s been worth it. He’s a champ.

How much do you think it would cost you to try to fix you when your legs stop working due to a genetic spinal issue?
