Vader’s Model Desk: Sd.kfz 165 15cm SP Howitzer “Hummel”

Great job! I have always been fascinated by German armor of World War II. The Nazis seemed to be years ahead of the allies. I think their sophistication and overengineering things often wound up being a negative. Thanks for sharing!

Indeed it did. And on top of that, they made things worse by not focusing their resources on one or two models of proven vehicles. Take tank destroyers for example. In 1944-45, they were producing and/or operating the following:
Marder III
StuG III
Ferdinand
Jagdpanzer IV
Jagdpanther
Jagdtiger
Hetzer
And it was not uncommon to find multiple types operating in the same Panzerjager Abteilung. Imagine the logistics nightmare just from spare parts alone.

Too damn many. Don’t get me wrong, as a model builder, I’m glad there’s so many German vehicles to choose from. But holy hell, how could they be so stupid? They start a war against the three largest industrial powers or the day, and on top of that they dilute their own industrial capacity by trying to produce a myriad of armored vehicles all at the same time?!? What were they thinking??
I listed the TDs the Germans were still producing at the end of the war in my last post. At that same time, they were producing the following tanks:
Pz.Kpfw IV
Pz.kpfw V Panther
Pz.kpfw VI Tiger
Pz.kpfw VI Ausf. B “königstiger”
And that’s not to mention things like half tracks (I don’t even know how many variants of the Sd.kfz 251 they were making, but I’d say at least a half dozen or more) SP artillery, armored recon vehicles, etc…
Meanwhile, we and the Soviets were rolling out Shermans and T-34s by the tens of thousands.
But the Germans were not alone in not being able to focus their efforts when it came to armor. The British were just as bad.

That’s what I was going for. I did this one in the late war “ambush” camo scheme as one of the Hummels in the artillery regiment of the 2nd Panzer Division as it was fighting against American forces in the Rhineland in the Spring of 1945 during the final weeks of the war. The 2nd Panzer Division would end the war in Fulda, Germany which was my first duty station when I got to Germany in 1988.

Yeah, but at least the Brits had an excuse - their tanks were uniformly awful until late in the war, unless they were driving a Sherman variant.
Of course now that I think about, the Germans had a similar excuse - their tanks were uniformly unreliable, from the beginning of the war until the end. In the early days of N Africa, they would regularly have 40-70% dropout due to mechanical failure driving into battle. Until the American tanks arrived, the Brits were just as bad.
