There’s one of these about 45 mins away from me and IIRC it’s the only flyable one in the country.

ETA: it is extremely loud

I had no idea any were left in flyable condition.

This is it. Another fun fact…..the Aviation Museum has a hanger salvaged from WW2 that was bombed out. They built it on the original skeleton and ended up finding welded initials from a slave laborer hidden on the backside of one of the trusses. They have a light and a mirror pointed towards it to view.

I thought about doing that pattern. But Stalingrad has always fascinated me so I chose the other pattern when I found the picture I posted on page 1.

The getaway plane from Where Eagles Dare (1969).

If it wasn’t for the fact that (1) this was a complete son of a bitch lit to build and (2) extremely hard to find, I’d be tempered to build it again and do that pattern. I’ve actually done a very similar pattern before, except it was on a Soviet SU-152 assault gun.

Outstanding, bit at this point we'd expect nothing less.

So I took the kid (13) to the hobby shop last week so he could buy a couple rockets with his birthday money. Well, he found a couple rockets but also picked up this (which was a surprise).

He started it yesterday and I've been impressed by his first effort. He watched an hour long youtube video on this specific model. His painting effort is what you'd expect but not terrible based on experience level (he's just using inexpensive latex paints.) When I asked him if he was going to just spray the bottom of the CSS Virginia with gray primer he said, "Dad, the Virginia was only an iron clad above the waterline. The hull needs to be brown." That's my history buff kid.

Fwiw, we abandoned the corsair we started. There were some fit issues with the wings we couldn't solve.

Man that’s awesome that your kid is getting into models. As for paints, I recommend trying Tamiya acrylics. You’ll need a bottle of Tamiya X-20 acrylic thinner to go with it. If you’re brush painting, mix it 3:1 (3 parts paint, 1 part thinner) for air brush 2:1 works best. Goes on easy, and since it’s acrylic, washes up easily with warm water.

And he’s got the right idea with YouTube. There’s a lot of how-to videos on there that are great.

I’ve wanted to get into model ships (think Trafalgar, not modern) but it seems very daunting lol

Tamiya acrylics are good, no doubt, but there are far better alternatives.

Tamiya’s paint pots are a pain in the arse to mix and get paint in and out of. So many damn toothpicks.

Tons of other incredible acrylic paints now come in squeeze bottles. Easy and clean to work with.

Mission Models and Vallejo are a couple I have in squeeze bottles. I hardly ever use Tamiya anymore, as they continue to choose to remain in the past.

Here's what he has done so far. He needs to paint the baseplate. And the paint on top of the monitor's turret wasn't dry yet. When we CA'ed the deck of the Virginia on the hull we got a little heavy handed (and it had a distinct sheen.) But he likes it and is proud of it. I mean he's 13....
