The Ilyushin Il-2 (Russian: ????´??? ??-2) is a ground-attack plane that was produced by the Soviet Union in large numbers during the Second World War. The word shturmovík (Cyrillic: ?????????), the generic Russian term for a ground-attack aircraft, became a synecdoche for the Il-2 in English sources, where it is commonly rendered Shturmovik, Stormovik[3] and Sturmovik.
To Il-2 pilots, the aircraft was known by the diminutive "Ilyusha". To the soldiers on the ground, it was called the "Hunchback", the "Flying Tank" or the "Flying Infantryman". Its postwar NATO reporting name was Bark.[5]
During the war, 36,183 units of the Il-2 were produced, and in combination with its successor, the Ilyushin Il-10, a total of 42,330[6] were built, making it the single most produced military aircraft design in aviation history, as well as one of the most produced piloted aircraft in history along with the American postwar civilian Cessna 172 and the German contemporary Messerschmitt Bf 109.
The Il-2 played a crucial role on the Eastern Front. When factories fell behind on deliveries, Joseph Stalin told the factory managers that the Il-2s were "as essential to the Red Army as air and bread."

Thanks. This one tested my nerves a bit. Frankly I’m not entirely sure how the landing gear is holding up, just a terrible design on the part of Accurate Miniatures really. But overall I’m pleased with how it turned out.

The IL-2M is a mother fricking bitch to fly in aces of thunder. Hell, all of the Russian planes are a bitch to fly. Flat spins all damn day unlike the fw190 or p51.

You da' man! Great work as usual. Thanks for sharing!

Did that rear-facing machine gun have some kind of limiter or block that kept the back seater from shooting his own tail off? I could easily see that happening in the heat of battle.

It’s also one of the best examples of the effectiveness of wartime propaganda ever. The myth of the IL-2 was that it was extremely rugged and difficult to shoot down. The reality though was, monthly losses averaged upwards of 300 per month! The IL-2 had one of the highest loss rates of any aircraft on either side during the war.

Gorgeous.
The rest of that letter from Stalin was him going off on the manufacturer for not making enough of them.
Btw how do you do your streaks? What paints do you use?

You have let down our country and our Red Army. You have the nerve not to manufacture IL-2s until now. Our Red Army now needs IL-2 aircraft like the air it breathes, like the bread it eats. Shenkman produces one IL-2 a day and Tretyakov builds one or two MiG-3s daily. It is a mockery of our country and the Red Army. I ask you not to try the government’s patience, and demand that you manufacture more Ils. This is my final warning.

So how long did it take you to get “good” at this? I’m 51 and busy as hell but I’d love to get into making models, especially as grandkids start getting to an age we could do them together. I worry as my hands seem unsteady in certain activities.

Here is the process I typically use:
1. Airbrush the camouflage pattern using Tamiya flat acrylics.
2. Airbrush gloss clear coat, again Tamiya acrylics.
3. Apply decals using Micro Sol or Tamiya Mark Fit Stong for better adhesion.
4. Airbrush flat clear coat, again Tamiya acrylics.
5. Using a large brush, coat the entire model with Tamiya Panel Line Accent, in this case I used black. There are various other colors to choose from.
6. Once this dries, I use cotton swabs soaked in Testors Enamel Thinner to clean off most of the Panel Accent. And since my paints are acrylic while the Panel Accent is Enamel, the Enamel Thinner doesn’t mess up the overall paint scheme. I rub the cotton swabs from front to back in straight lines to leave an overall front to back patter on the “grime” that’s left.
(I didn’t do it on this build, but I also sometimes follow this up with a Flory Weather Wash. I typically use Grime, Brown, or something similar. But this is typically something I only do on armored vehicles.

Very nice work as always

Very cool. Maybe one day I'll get into Tamiya acrylics. I have so many other paints now.
I've done oil dot weathering which is fun but it can be easy to put too much.

Looks amazing as usual.
I tried getting into this last year until I realized how hard it is to make it look like you make them look.
