I see you’ve done various scales. For military models I always did 1/35, simply because they’re usually larger.

I’ve seen these 1/16 scale kits that look great but they’re not cheap.

Have you done any of those?

I’ve heard that Revell kits made in Germany are far better than those made elsewhere.

Gotcha.

And I'm assuming a German factory making Nazi war machines would be frowned upon.

I'd love to see a pic thread showing some progress pics of a build from unboxing to final product.

Holy shite, the weathering on some is awesome. I know it’s probably been explained, But how do you actually do the weathering?

Thanks. Well, I brush paint everything. I start buy building the model and painting it to appear brand new. Then, I’ll use my tweezers and a tiny piece of sponge to dab on paint to make it look like chips in the paint. I do most of the chipping along edges where you’d expect to see chipped paint. I then use panel accent of either deep brown and/or rust on things like bold heads, creases, hatch edges, etc. after this I will apply a wash of grime/dirt. After that dries I’ll use a wet q-tip to blend it in.

Time consuming?

It can be. But that’s what’s fun.

It makes it looks so real. I’ve seen a thousand models done as is. But few with the realistic weathered look.

Thanks. I’m glad you like them.

Yep. And because of German law, most WWII era Luftwaffe aircraft do not include swastikas in their decal sheets. You have to buy them aftermarket if you want to build an accurate model.

That's what truly makes it a work of art.

I’ve seen them. But the only thing I’ve done above 1/35 scale is probably about 20 years ago I built a 1/32 scale FW190A. I was one of the victims of a unsupervised toddler who’s parents had come to visit about 16 years ago.

Because of you, I’ve stood in Hobby Lobby looking at models with my SO and her pushing me to start doing them as a hobby. I don’t only because I believe I lack the patience. I will start rushing and cutting corners to finish and defeat the purpose.

I’m wired to finish, and not enjoy the process. I hate it but it’s true. Not sure I can train my brain differently.

But mad respect for your patience and attention to detail.

What is the average build time involved?

Depends on the kit. Some are 8-12 hours, others well over 40.

Do you do all the paint work as well?

Yes. They come in the box unpainted. I brush paint using Tamiya acrylic paints.

I'm the same way but I think this is something that might could come in with age.

I consider this my best build…

It’s a great hobby. I’ve been doing it since I was probably 7 or 8 years old. What type of model are you interested in building?

I’m very much the same. When I start something, doesn’t matter what it is, I’m determined to finish. But the great thing about models, it teaches you patience. The kit I have on my desk is a great example of having to be patient. But more than that, you have to have a high degree of attention to detail. If you misread or overlook a small detail in the instructions, it can be disastrous.

You’re very right. When I was young, I was focused on finishing the model. And it showed in my work. Now I take my time and enjoy the build itself. That’s one reason why I ditched the airbrush and went back to brush painting. It forces me to take my time.

I’m a WWII buff, so think I would start with WWII and WWI airplanes. Only because they seem like they’d be a bit easier than tanks or other vehicles.

But I also love old muscle cars, or just old classic vehicles from the 50’s-60’s, so have looked at those as well. And with those, would want them looking fully restored so that would be easier with no weathering.

Gotcha. If you buy from Hobby Lobby, I’d recommend staying away from their Revell kits, especially the B-25 & P-61 kits they carry.

I’ve built both and they will make you hate models. The fit on both is pitiful. I’m fact, the only aircraft kits at Hobby Lobby I’d trust are the Academy kits. I think they sell a B-17 that as a recall is not bad.
