Is there room for negotiating with Carmax?
Typically, No. The asking price is the asking price.

There is nothing routine about changing the timing belt on most modern vehicles.
Well, on some of Toyota's V8's it's not that bad for something that only has to be done once every 80k - 100k miles. Change oil cam seals and water pump at the same time and you'll have something that will last forever. Even vehicles with timing chains there are tensioners and guides that eventually need attention if not the timing chains themselves. Even a typical small-block V8 timing chain doesn't last forever.

Growing up I was told “5 years old and 40k miles” are when all the problems start.
Someone gave you bad advice on the mileage unless you grew up in the 50s or 60s.
The year is less important than the mileage.

This has been my method for all but one of the cars I’ve ever owned since I started buying cars in 2000. Two years old and no more than 30k miles. Most were more in the mid-20k range.
Only one I bought new was for work because under the company’s mileage reimbursement program it didn’t make sense to buy 1-2 years old.

With new trucks the problems start when you drive them off the lot.

Look for:
1 owner
0 wrecks
Good maintenance record
The end
1 owner
0 wrecks
Good maintenance record
The end

57y/o here. It’s basically true that in the 70’s and pretty much 80’s 100k miles was about it. Cars were mostly shite then.

The invention of the overdrive transmission changed the being worn out mentality of the 70s and early 80s. I still have a hard time thinking about a vehicle having 60000 miles on it and being totally trustworthy. It was just a different era some of us went through.

quote:3 is good, if under 25k miles. I purchased a 2018 540i X-Drive for $37k with 17k miles coming off a 3 year lease. Here we are, 5 years later, and she has only 32k miles on it. $0 dollars to repair. $$$ spent on maintenance, though.

Has to be a troll.
40K miles is practically brand new.
Both of my cars are north of 195K. Granted, not every car lasts like Honda's do.
