UPDATE, May 26, 2017: Randy Noller, a spokesman for the Department of Veterans Affairs confirmed Irene Triplett is still alive.

The Civil War ended more than 150 years ago, but the U.S. government is still paying a veteran's pension from that conflict.

"One beneficiary from the Civil War [is] still alive and receiving benefits," Randy Noller of the Department of Veterans Affairs confirms.

Irene Triplett – the 86-year-old daughter of a Civil War veteran – collects $73.13 each month from her father's military pension. The identity of Triplett was first reported by The Wall Street Journal in 2014.

While Triplett has outlived all the spouses of Civil War veterans, it is not by as long a period as one might think. The last Confederate widow, Maudie Hopkins died on Aug. 1, 2008, at age 93. The last Union widow, Gertrude Janeway, died Jan. 17, 2003, also at age 93.

LINK

Pretty crazy.

ETA: I thought this was from last month, I forgot it's 2018.

Didn't bother clicking the link, huh?

The U.S. government pays out veterans' benefits to spouses and dependents of former soldiers. A subsection of Title 38 of the United States Code spells out the rules and regulations for their allocation, including for the Civil War, even though that now only applies to one person in the country, Triplett.

In the years before WWI, hillbillies started marrying off their gal younguns to CW vets, so the whole family could share in the eventual pension

Yeah, I was trying to do math lol. Being that she was born in 1910, that would mean that her husband was at least 55 years old when they married

That makes sense as to how the civil war widows outlived the WWI widows.

Wait, if her dad was born in 1865, he would have been 67 when she was born. Let's just say he was 15 in 1865, that means he was 82 when she was born.

She does the same thing that Edwin Edward's wife does, and other similar gold diggers

Why do I have the feeling that they have about 20 people on payroll that run whatever division is in charge of making sure this payment goes out every month.

I'm just saying she did pretty well for not doing anything. Plus if you want to really complain, we as a nation, waste so much more money that if we reallocated it, we could give so much to those in need, along with welfare and food stamps, and probably still lowering taxes (if the politicians really cared about the US citizens). A few years ago we made a $38 billion dollar deal with Israel, that makes no fricking sense and a waste of taxpayers money.

Why not take care of our nation first, then help others after that? But then again, it is and never was about helping people. It is about having control of a nation that we can use to murder and kill while protecting our oil and poppy fields in the middle east. Lets not kid ourselves now.
