I can see how this would be dangerous for other motorists...especially motor cycle drivers.

quote:

The U.S. government’s road safety agency is investigating complaints that windshield trim panels can fly off of Ford Explorers while they’re traveling at highway speeds.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has 164 complaints about the trim pieces detaching on 2011 through 2019 Explorer SUVs. The probe covers about 1.86 million vehicles.

The parts could hit the windshield of following vehicles or even a motorcycle rider, possibly causing loss of control and a crash, the agency said.

This is happening to my wife's Explorer right now. Thought it was a SafeLite issue.

Will file complaint with the NHTSA and will call the dealership and try to get a free fix.

Go easy on Ford. They've only been building cars with parts for 100+ years.

164 complaints for 1.86 million vehicles? Yeah, I'll take my chances.

I rented a new Ford Explorer recently on a work trip. I noticed the windshield didn’t have any trim. I thought it was odd, but assumed the windshield was recently replaced and the installer didn’t replace the trim.

Now I’m guessing the trim just flew off. The vehicle only had about 4,000 miles on it. I thought it was odd at the time the windshield was already replaced.

Ford issued an immediate recall so that it can install these stickers on the back of all Explorers

When I was a really young kid, I was riding in a pickup from Atlanta to New Orleans with my Dad. There was a guy on a motorcycle riding close behind a semi when a piece from one the recapped trailer tires peeled loose and went flying.

The guy on the bike danced and just barely avoided being killed. I bet he shite his pants, at least I think I would have.

I ride a motorcycle now and that scene stays burned in my mind, flying debris happens.

Not very dangerous as long as it was flaccid. If I recall that one wasn't very good for motorcyclists either

Well it couldn't have been from an Explorer then. The dicks are usually installed behind the wheel.

ETA: I feel like a jerk for making that joke. Too soon.

Can confirm. Lost my roof rails at the 10/12 split. They recalled them and tried to say they had to test them out first to see if I was approved. I then told them it almost nailed someone going 70 and they laughed and said okay you’re approved. Previously when I told them they were not secure, they said “just don’t go in a car wash.” Now they’re replaced and screwed down.
