Good thread, considering how horrible the story is. That was very nearly me, a long long time ago.

there was no indication in your post of you saying it as a joke. I just assumed you were in a idiot, like most people do.

Know what you mean. A guy I worked with years ago took his young daughter out trawling with him one day and for whatever reason, she didn't have a life jacket on. She fell overboard when he was keeping an eye on where he was going in a tight bayou and when he looked back, she was gone.

He immediately stopped the boat and pulled up the net and his little girl was in it dead.

He still lives with that to this day and that was over 30 yrs. ago. You know he blames himself for not having her with a lifejacket on and keeping a better eye on her.

I know I would if it were me.

thats terrible but idk if a life jacket would have saved her if she was in the net.

Yeah no way to tell that it was a joke when I said I wouldn’t have a pool until my kids were fricking 30.

Well the kid was 19 months here. Kinda question what the parents were doing.

Being completely normal parents likely

Watching the kid in the living room. Phone rings. You leave for aproimately 12 seconds to go answer the phone.

Come back and kid is out of living room. No big deal so you check his bedroom, then the bathroom, then the laundry room etc etc because that is where he has walked to a 10000x before.

By the time you notice he has figured out how to open the door to the backyard and fall into the pool it is too late.

It doesnt really take poor/bad/even absent minded parenting for this to happen

There's a good chance she may have not gotten caught in the net in the first place since he was bottom trawling, but he'll never know.

That door alarm someone posted is a good idea. And a gate around the pool with locks the kid can’t reach. I’d be terrified about that shite.

My in-laws system tells you what door has been opened. My nephew's sole purpose in life is getting out of the house. It has saved their arse several times.

Trust me I am

The problem with the simple doors that beep is that you get so used to that sound it becomes second nature.....

The best mechanism I have seen is you place a doorbell button looking thing on the inside part of the house near the door about 5.5 feet high. When you go to open the door, you press the button first. If you do, the door opens in silence. If not, the loudest buzz ever goes off until you press the button. So it is impossivle for a toddler to quietly get outside.

We rented a beach house that had this, and it was annoying as hell for us because we always forgot to press the button before exiting the door. But my parents are installing it in their lake house for the grandkids

My in laws are about to build a separate fence around their pool because of the recent instances of toddler drownings we know of

My in laws’ house talks when the doors are opened. “Front door open” or “back garage door open” etc. It’s nice and I haven’t gotten used to it yet in 4+ years.

Seems like the best bet along with swim/safety lessons as soon as the kids are able to.

I felt like this actually has made it more dangerous with our 2 year old

He used to not have confidence in the pool, so he wanted to only stay on the steps or in the hot tub

Now, dude thinks he is chief swinging dick and will jump in anywhere. Problem is, he still cant really swim for shite he just thinks he can

US Olympian Bode Miller’s Daughter Drowns in Pool by biglego

We’re installing a pool now and kids are 4 and 3 yr old. I already put a deadbolt on the back door, which stays locked and needs a key to open which is hidden up high from them. I like the door alarm idea too.

That's dangerous too if quick escape is needed from fire.

I don't understand how you're not watching your baby like a hawk at all times when around a pool.

Especially a 19 month old. For fricks sake

I have this system. It’s called a smart house. We use Vivint.

Eta.... I have 3 teens so mine is to make sure their lil asses don’t sneak out. Glad my parents didn’t have that.

Do you know the name of this system?

And do you know if it works/alarms from the door being opened from both the inside and the outside?
