Sure, and back when we had a big bad enemy capable of trying to keep up with us, spending money on shite like this...worth it (think Soviets).
Whose that enemy now?
Iran? North Korea? China?
None of them can even think about taking on a single American battle group with their pathetic naval power.
So who was this 4-billion dollar ship built to fight? ISIS?
Wake up. It's not 1996 anymore.....
A new report from the U.S. Navy’s intelligence branch paints a sobering picture of Putin’s increasingly aggressive fleet—and its deadly international shows of force.

And it's really China that looks to be the bigger maritime threat...

The Russians will never deploy a navy capable of taking ours on.
The glory days of the Soviet Union are far far behind them.
Correct me if I am wrong but didn't China buy that carrier from Russia?
Yeah, not more then a regional threat...at most. The Chinese navy has been and will remain tied to their coast line.
The Chinese are decades away from being able to project any kind of naval power.

Can you explain the need for destroyers in this day?
Pretty much the most badass naval warships we currently have.

How long would you stay submerged and in the submarine before seeing the world again, and what is it like to breathe the outside air for the first time in a while after surfacing?

I stayed the frick out of the sonar shack. A dark room full of weirdos is asking for trouble.
Who were bigger nerds, the sonar guys, or the nuke mechanics?

Still my favorite. Got to see Missouri fire her guns when we were enroute to the IO for a westpac. Damn cool thing to watch.
I'm sure the concussion from that thing is incredible

True. But the point is their rebuilding and modernizing their navy. Thus, we can either sit back, do nothing, and let them catch up or we can develop and deploy new naval platforms to maintain our naval supremacy.

Yes, that's the Liaoning.

LINK
This carrier was built by the Soviets in the mid-80's and sold to China in the late 90's The Chinese refitted and commissioned her in 2012
But this was just the start. China is currently working on a 80,000 carrier and plan on having three Carrier Battle Groups by within the five years. ( LINK)
And yes, even when they have completed their carrier groups we will still hold a substantial naval superiority. But what you've got to remember is we're trying to be a global naval power projecting power thousands of miles from our homeland. They're trying to only dominate the seas around South East Asia which is right in their back yard where they can also bring to bear things like land based aircraft and missiles. Do you know how strategically vital those seas are?

My personal record was 62 days but my ship stayed out to sea for 126 days straight. They only surfaced once (to pick me and some others up along with some supplies in the Indian Ocean). Only 2 of those days were on the surface
At the end of that run, we pulled into port in Bahrain. We had been sitting off the coast of Pakistan going slow and waiting on orders to fire TLAMS at Al Qaeda (this was pre-9/11)....We traveled so slow that algae had grown to cover the entire ship. We literally pulled into port in a lime green submarine. The junior sailors spent the next day pressure washing/scrubbing the hull clean.
Breathing "clean" air isn't that much different than submarine air except you don't smell the amine (used to clear CO2). My ex-wife used to make me immediately strip my clothes off

That author's assertion that we have a legitimate rival on the high seas is ludicrous.

Probably nuke EM's and ET's followed closely by Sonar Techs. The nuke mechanics were usually pretty "normal". By normal I mean they'd be more likely to get an eyeball tattooed on their dick (true story) than to play Magic the Gathering or some shite like that.

Until someone forgets to secure the water while filling the scrubber and it overflows... there really is no way of getting away with that frickup.
