Can you explain the need for destroyers in this day?

They support carrier battle groups, perform missile strikes, and anti-submarine duty.

Too bad Admiral Zumwalt, the Father of the PC Navy, wasn't impressive.

Controlling the oceans(transportation, deployment, etc) is a top priority for the military.

So much can be moved by boat. You need to protect that.

In that second to last picture, the huge boat was about the 4th thing my eye was drawn to.

Yeah, and considering that any serious threat to the US would have to cross one of two oceans to get to us, I'd say our navy is pretty important. Also significant is that we need to cross oceans to get to our enemies.

My question is bigger than that. And it's an honest question. Why do we need ships?

Some fair responses. Again, I'm not trolling. It just seems with all the air and automated capabilities, this type of beast could be obsolete.

No. $4 billion would have greased a lot of palms on the way to building a few roads or schools. Military procurement isn't any better, but find a better criticism than that.

You can't do in the air what you can do on the water in terms of efficiency and price.

Kinda off topic but not really. On average, 90% of everything you own got to you by a ship. Air is just not feasible currently

I love me some navy but a 4 billion dollar destroyer ...given our current environment of having zero enemies who can even consider taking on our navy.

A bit pricey.

quote:

Navies exist first and foremost to win command of the sea, overcoming foes’ efforts to deny it this goal or exercise command themselves. Zumwalt, by contrast, is almost exclusively a shore-bombardment platform, designed to rain projectiles on targets far inland. That means she will either rely on other ships to hold enemy defenses at bay, or perform her mission under near-constant enemy fire. The hard fact confronting mariners is that shore-based defenses — tactical aircraft, anti-ship and anti-air missiles — now outrange the U.S. Navy fleet, while even lesser navies boast an array of submarines and patrol craft able to make trouble for outsiders. Projecting power ashore must await victory in the fight for command. Delay can cost you.

Hull number (DDG-1000).

The Arleigh Burke class started at DDG-51 and went into the 100's. The previous Spruance class were 900's.

Looks like they jumped back to where Spruance left off.

True. I was in businesses that dealt with container ships and I've seen the massive commerce through Louisiana and Texas ports. It's astounding.
