I just didn't realize Mattel/Lego was the go to manufacturer these days for our war ships.

Does it look stupid? Sure.

Is looking cool more important than being the most advanced stealth ship on the ocean that's so stealthy it's hard to even see it without radar? No.

I would not call it stupid. But I will say, i much prefer the overall look of old warships like this....

USS Arizona has always been my favorite.

And even the old turn-of the 20th century pre-dreadnoughts like this....

But still, this new DD is pretty bad arse.

You explain the cost/benefit of that monster.

Supposed to be cheaper to operate... and it has about half the crew size of other destroyers.

Then what? Sneaks into harbour and BOOM! I mean, what does it do?

Right. It's printing money with its savings.

You served right? And I respect that. Can you explain the need for destroyers in this day?

That is crazy looking. Like it doesn't look like it has doors for the crew to go in and out.

Not being able to be picked up on radar is a useful tool.

Go from there with the things you can do with that

I'm wondering if the crew is allowed anywhere topside while at sea?

Yeah, it looks like it would offer the full claustrophobic experience of submarine duty, all while staying afloat on top the water. frick that.

My question is bigger than that. And it's an honest question. Why do we need ships? Just for the big stick factor?

By and large that's all they've ever been for. Doesn't make them without a purpose.

1. Do you now the role a destroyer fills in the fleet?

2. What else can fulfill that role?

$4 billion could've built a lot of roads or schools. . .

Not so much. It fricks the harbor up from standoff distance before the bad guys even know it's there.

To protect our other commercial shipping and naval interests?

Primarily I would think to protect our aircraft carriers.

And in a prefect world we'd not have to spend $4 billion on things like destroyers. But here in the real world, we do.

Well since it has 155 mm guns that can destroy targets at a range of 63 nautical miles, I'm going to guess that it doesn't need to sneak into a harbor to engage the enemy. It also has guided missile launchers and sonar to detect underwater threats (subs and mines).
