I might be an Army guy, but I'll admit the technology and firepower of the US Navy is awe-inspiring.

Pretty sure that's been phased out. When I was on CVN-76 when it was first built, we didn't have any. Replaced them with missile guided systems. Now we have rail guns and lasers and shite

I'm sure it was just future refugees sending up a flare to tell us where to pick them up. Obama needs to apologize for this grievous error.

Cruise missiles fell into the water before SM-2's could intercept them

Am I the only one that thinks this is a massive failure. The SM-2 missles fired against missles on a trajectory that wouldn't hit the ship and the targets hit the water before it made it to the ship. Seems like it should only fire for active targets otherwise, that supply gets exhausted quickly. It wouldn't take a genius to fire a bunch of cheap rockets until the SM-2s are gone, then break out the high class missles to hit the US destroyer.

Sounds like the destroyer really didn't need much in the way of defense, but you don't know that when the missiles are closing in I guess.

No you don't - they're the last-resort defense when everything else has failed.

when radar detects an incoming cruise missile threat a number of countermeasures systems are launched automatically.

Furthermore you launch your anti-missile systems at the maximum effective range giving yourselves time to continuously fight against the threat. The cruise missiles could have been running hot straight and normal when the SM-2s were launched

You think they are just going to sit there and let them fire upon us. If it gets that hot they will bomb the hell out of the area firing the missiles.

The Navy has fired Tomahawk cruise missiles into Yemen from the Red Sea, targeting Houthi militant positions and installations.

The United States military has carried out Tomahawk missile strikes in Yemen in retaliation for three failed missile attacks by Houthi militants against the USS Mason, a U.S. Navy destroyer operating in international waters in the Red Sea. "Early this morning local time, the U.S. military struck three radar sites in Houthi-controlled territory on Yemen's Red Sea coast," said Peter Cook, the Pentagon press secretary. The strikes fired from the destroyer USS Nitze were authorized by President Obama. Cook said the radar sites had been "involved in the recent missile launches threatening USS Mason and other vessels operating in international waters in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb." Initial assessments indicate that the strikes were successful, Cook said.
