Campaigns

It seems like the Western Front was more dangerous than the Pacific contrary to popular opinion.

Also, China has a lot of US blood on its fingers

Western front had larger scale fights.

Pacific Front was uglier on a battle by battle basis but you didn’t have many large scale casualties simply because it was island hopping and I don’t think they lost too many big boats besides the Indianapolis after Pearl Harbor.

Also crazy how we lament thousands dead when the Russians had millions die. Not saying we shouldn’t mourn them but holy shite did the Russians throw their people into a meat grinder.

I think the casualty rates were higher in places like Saipan, Pelilue and Iwo. There were hundreds of thousands of troops involved in a lot of the European campaigns.

Scroll up to battles. WBTS battles dominate. Crazy numbers.

Also, thankfully the US came in the WW1 very late. Some of those campaigns had staggering losses for both sides.

The Somme- 141 days, 1 million killed or wounded
Verdun- 9 months, 700k casualties, 300k killed

Yeah there were areas of France, Canada, England, etc, that had fricked up gene pools due to losing so many men in that generation.

I feel like people just see the western theater as D-day and that’s it. It was actually pretty brutal with a lot of urban combat and setbacks. The Germans didn’t mess around at all lol.

We really don't have many KIA considering how many wars we have fought in. Most places in Europe and Asia have KIA in the millions if you add up their wars. Many places break a million just from WW1 or WW2 alone. Or in China, some random rebellion you've never heard of that killed millions.

Russia lost around 1.7million in ww1
Germany close to 2mill
France 1.3
UK 800k

Germany and France lost 4% of their total population (including civilians )

The Turks lost up to 15% of their population which is insane.

Darth Vader has discussed this before. ETO was much more dangerous than the Pacific for the American fighting man.
I think the 8th AF's KIA rate, not casualty rate, was something over 20%.

The German civilians were scared shitless of what opposing forces would do to them.

Which was true in the Russians’ case but German civilians were shocked that US soldiers mainly wanted them to prove the food and drink weren’t poisoned then to go sleep in the basement all night so that the soldiers didn’t have to worry about getting their throats slit while sleeping.

The Russians made things incalculably worse for themselves when they killed millions of their own during the purges. Many of their competent military commanders were killed, which left poor leadership, and caused higher than necessary casualties.
Their military structure was also rigid and inflexible (a problem that persists today) which contributed as well.

Not the body count. It was the fighting conditions.

Was legendary, rather small battlefields with massive casualties. It had to have been hell on earth.

Your own men would shoot you if you didn't go over the top.
