Student loans are fine but the interest rates should be manageable.

What's the maximum length in a repayment plan? 20 years? 25 years?

Do you think one should be allowed to extend the repayment period to say 35 years? 40 years? Sure, you'll pay more in the long term with interest, but it could make the repayments much more manageable and feasible.

I'm completely fine with government regulation of student loan interest rate levels, not letting them compound, or start piling up until graduation.

However, that is already pushing it and should be the end of it.

Why any interest at this point? Rates are so low now. If you aren't going to forgive, why have interest?

Not really. I have like 5%...

They could regulate to 2% or less across the board, stop compounding interest, and hold off collecting interest until graduation.

Those 3 things would help.

Maybe they would be more manageable if some of these worthless fricks actually paid the loans back. They're giving out high-risk, no collateral loans to a group of people that don't want to repay them. Sure let's drop it down to 1% on that interest rate.

Its absolutely absurd there is even 1 person out there that feels they should be "forgiven" of their loan debt for a loan they consciously and willfully borrowed. How in the frick can someone justify that? You borrowed money under agreed upon terms of repayment and now you don’t want to repay it. Tough titty.

And it's not like you are not aware that you have to pay back student loans. You are made to sign numerous forms that state you understand that you cannot default on student loans. Even when I was in college you had to do that and meet with someone for counseling.

Boofricking hoo if you have a ton of student loans. Maybe think twice about your major and only take out what you really need then.

Sure thing buddy boy.

In 20 years people will look back at your posts and think you're a Looney tune.

Free public college is coming in our lifetimes whether you baws like it or not.

I agree with you. Hopefully, they will be wise enough to have free vocational school programs also. Our country is really deficient on vocational training.

Wow. You don't know me. I'm extremely responsible, probably more so than most posters here. I have no debt except my monthly Amex and another card, both of which I always pay in full. I make financial decisions for me fairly often, and they generally work out well.

Don't you have a very rich daddy that paid for everything? Making financial decisions when you have a safety net the size of the super dome underneath you is a little different than Joe blow who has $100 to his name

Same, mine was all online but yeah.....they make you go through this whole long tutorial thing that states over and over that you have to pay the loans back.

Then when I spoke on the phone with my student advisor I had to verbalize the same thing on the phone with her with the conversation recorded.

You clearly can default on it, and people do. Those who are suffering from draconian student loan payments need to do an "Occupy Wall St." type movement.

Of course, if you think U.S. Marshal's should be out hauling people to court at gunpoint, more power to you.

Nothing is free. Those who have will be forced under penalty of law to support those who dont

And how's that working out? We can't even manage to keep that program running smoothly because there's no money... but let's open up public colleges to anyone that feels like they deserve it. For "FREE".

Mine was online as well. They did calculators to show what my payments would be, how the interest would add up, and how long it would take to pay it off depending on what monthly payments I could make.

They made sure to make it clear enough for a 3rd grader to know how much I’ll owe, by when, and that it never goes away. It was downright repetitive in letting me know these things.

People are just lazy and lack personal accountability.

I wish that wasn't so, but no one will do what it takes to stop income inequality so that is how it has to be.

As long as the wealthy 1% hogs all the wealth, then the majority will vote to take some of it away.
