We'll probably never know but I like to think those pilots were just trying to steer it into an open parking lot at that point to prevent ground casualties.

Im sure the FDR and CVR will explain what was going on in those few seconds.

Also appears engine 2 may have flamed out after engine 1 detached... debris maybe? Idk

And for those in the hospital with serious injuries. I'd rather die than be severely burned.

So, what I’ve gathered from the 8 pages of this thread is it appears there was some sort of catastrophic engine failure that caused this plane to crash on takeoff.

I say that because of

1. Footage of a fire at the base of the LH wing

2. The picture of what appears to be a jet engine laying on the side of the runway after the crash

I also someone mention something about this plane having a maintenance issue for this very engine recently?

"There's nothing you can do when an engine rips off"

That's not always the case.

That's the working theory (how I see it) as of now

Engine 1 detaches from plane and causes structural damage. Structural damage on a plane loaded to the max with fuel and cargo. Pilots did the best with what they had to work with, but there was no chance.

Pray for the families of all involved. Horrible day for a lot of people. Just sad all around.

That’s the impression we’re getting here locally as well.

We’ll get more in the coming days but right now there’s just trying to contain the fire and potential hazards in the surrounding area.

777, the pic i posted showed flames coming out of the back of engine 2... is that a flame out? Can you help decipher what is going on there? What could have potentially caused that?

Any word on any injuries to people on the ground? I haven't read through the whole thread.

Watching the video of takeoff they were on the runway while the engine was on fire did nobody radio them to stop?

Seems they could have shut down the engines and maybe prevented the explosion?

Engine 2 def was shooting flames. Gotta be FOD. So one good engine on a fully loaded MD-11. Those poor pilots never had a chance.

Still just hearing the 3 on board as deaths and 11 hospitalized with significant injuries.

I have the same thought process

My initial thought was maybe it was part of the nacelle or spar... idk just speculating... either way, losing 2 of 3 engines on a flight that is as loaded as this, is a terrible problem to have

Flames coming out of an engine is not a flameout. A flameout is a loss of thrust. No idea if that’s the case in this crash.
