Something that fascinates me the most about aviation disasters is seeing which procedures and engineering protocols are fine-tuned in response. It’s a research rabbit hole.

Governor Beshear updated online about 20 minutes ago that we’re up to 9. Still 11 hospitalized and about 16 reported missing, mostly at a couple of the businesses that were affected within the radius of the airport.

The engine was found halfway down the runway. It fell off way before it was airborne. Appears when it came off, it created a hole in the wing and fuel ignited.

Most recent update from noon presser (quoting info from Shay McAllister’s FB, local journalist):
quote:
12 p.m. PLANE CRASH UPDATE- newest information from Louisville leaders, airport, fire officials. Here's what we learned:
-"No reason to believe this is anything other than a tragic accident"- Mayor Craig Greenberg
-Right now, there are four engines, four trucks, two ambulances, 30-40 firefighters, and a search and rescue team still on scene
-They are expecting to be on scene for at least a week, working through the 'debris zone'.
-The Louisville International Airport has partially reopened- one runway is operational.
-Mayor Craig Greenberg said everyone's water is safe to drink unless you have been specifically contacted by emergency management personnel.
-Greenberg has asked everyone to stop flying drones within the no-fly zone above the flight crash. "Please do not be that person that's getting in the way of our recovery efforts", he said.
-The NTSB is on site; Morgan McGarvey said they are going over everything with "a fine-tooth comb".
-Okolona Fire Chief Mark Little said his department did a training just two weeks ago with the airport and Louisville fire to prepare for an emergency like this one. "You hope that's training you never have to use," he said.
-The Jefferson County Coroner was at the scene last night and is back at the scene today. The agency is working to confirm identities and notify family members.
-9 people are dead, several others hurt, and 16 people still missing

Never fails. People believe they are entitled to fly those damn things wherever and whenever they want. Too many don't give a damn about anything else going on.

The NTSB will have a briefing at 2:00 PM CST this afternoon regarding their investigation.

There's definitely a puff. Its low because the front of the plane is lifting off.

You might be right. There was probably and lot of low oxygen air being sucked in from the fire and lord knows what else may have been sucked in.

Even if they are, people have lost all situational awareness and compassion during events like this. They just want to post shite to tiktok.

NTSB says the left engine caught fire and detached in the update.
The left engine of a doomed UPS plane caught fire during takeoff and immediately detached, officials in Kentucky said Wednesday, leading to the horrific crash and deaths of at least nine people.
Investigators have recovered the cockpit flight recorder and the flight data recorder, National Transportation Safety Board member Todd Inman said, in hopes of finding out more about Tuesday's tragic accident just outside of Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.
CCTV footage shows the left engine detaching from the wing during takeoff, Inman told reporters.
"The plane lifted off and gained enough altitude to clear the fence at the end of runway 17 R. Shortly after clearing that fence, it made impact with structures and the terrain off of the airport property," Inman said.
