Yep. We live in the Tara district. I'd foreclose on my house before I'd send my daughter to that school

So if they build more apartments in one of the "better" schools districts or make them section 8

I’ve lived in EBR Parrish my entire life and I now live in the proposed St George area. I signed the petition the first go around and have signed it this time as well. To me, St George is simply a last ditch effort. If the city is successful, I’ll stay until I retire. Which is what I really want to do. If it’s not successful and things continue to deteriorate, we will leave Louisiana and not look back. At least somebody is trying to do something in this area to make things better. Those of you that have already left shouldn’t chastise those that are holding out hope that things might turn around.

If there was no busing the public schools in the ghetto would be made out of solid white marble and get new high tech computers every year while the schools in nice neighborhoods would be falling down and the parents would have to cut the grass.
The government dumps money into failing schools thinking the kids will do better but it's hard to make kids with an average iq below 80 read and do math

Problem is BR cannot survive without the tax dollars in this area. Something is wrong when your town is supplemented by areas not inside its jurisdiction.
The sales tax in The city of Welfare or BR is 10%.
They get extra services such as city court, city judges, BRPD, BRFD, constable, downtown development, Baton Rouge visitors bureau all hotels besides the ones in Zachary & Baker charge this tax at 0 cost to BR Citizens.
The sales tax in unicorporated EBRP is 10%.
Our roads are bad, grass is high in our ditches and most of the times never get cut, no plan to clean ditches in our area to help runoff, ditches in subdivisions are clogged in a lot of subdivisions with ditches, no entrance ramp to I-10 while BR is paying for the govt street project, and they shove more development in our area with the lack of services. Some developments have a private sewer company and neighborhood septic tank while still paying sewer user fees.
We are getting screwed and it is time we get our money back and let BR raise the taxes inside the city to substain their lifestyle.
You would think with all the LSU grads that someone could teach the city of BR to go on a financial diet or does LSU not teach finance and how to budget?
We can do without BR.
Can BR do without our money?

I hear you.
I grew up and spent most of my life in St George, finally moving when I got married and had kids.
I’d have loved to live there and bring my kids up there if not for public schools being completely unacceptable and private schools being too expensive.
A lot of the reasons we are in this mess are due to things from 30+ years ago including the Parker deseg plan and the double-shot of the city parish merger and the federal policies blocking annexation to prevent “vote dilution.”
If the city had annexed all these areas off Essen, Bluebonnet, Siegeln, Highland, Coursey, etc, as they were growing, they would all be part of BR proper and not be able to incorporate as St George.
If the EBRPSS weren’t so fundamentally fricked that you basically have the chosen ones in the magnet programs and then most other people stuck in gladiator academies, we wouldn’t be in this situation.
If the state legislature hadn’t turned down our proposed ISD with an excuse of “Come back when you are a city”, we wouldn’t be here.
Etc etc etc.
But here we are. The situation is untenable for a variety of reasons, including the circus that is the EBR school board, and this is a last ditch effort to try and save things.

You had to throw that in there. That is used by people suffering from white guilt, who want to make themselves feel better for being more successful than others. I do not suffer from that disease.

Absolutely, Louisiana has so much going for it, it is sad that it is in the condition it is. Unfortunately about half of the population don't want a hand up they want a hand out.

When I taught at Baker Middle it was a NASA-sponsored school. They provided laptops and all sorts of other shite that the kids were clueless about. A guy from NASA would come each year and talk to those kids and they had no clue WTF he was talking about

What do they plan to do to stop their school district from getting ruined just the same?

The diversity I speak of is economic based. No white guilt here, buddy. I threw out the "keep the poors out" to keep my OT street cred. Just messing with you.
And, if you need any other proof that these other very successful areas of our great country are doing well for those reasons that Baton Rouge lacks then I can't help you. Again, ask yourself why these other areas are able to attract and retain a growing population and maintain all those aspects (economy, schools, infrastructure, low crime, etc) that people are moving there for (unlike BR or Louisiana).
Read articles from their papers. Their "problems" would be our "blessing". Too many people coming in, soaring property values, etc.
Again, St G won't solve any of it. I don't claim to have the answers but I think a regional (and, even a State) approach that involves diversifying the economy, improving schools, improve property values, increased investment in infrastructure, etc and it would be a long term approach.

This silly arse process reminds me of an HOA. You silly frickers want "big brother" to handle your business.

Not as many poor people in the St George area. It's a solid middle class to wealthy area.
South Baton Rouge in general is nothing like the crime infested northern side of the city outside of a few areas.
The schools just all suck because the districts were gerrymandered to make them racially balanced. It had the opposite effect. All of the white people moved to the suburbs or put their kids in private school. We are top 5 in the nation as far as the percentage of kids in private schools. BR public schools are 80-90% black aside from the magnet programs.

I’ll be willing to put money where my mouth is and bet you $1k it happens.
You can tell who the Democrats are in this thread. They want your tax money and they don’t want you to have any control over it. It’s racist to them if you do.
I’ll tell you the truth of what the big deal about this is.
1) the unincorporated area is not part of Baton Rouge. They aren’t currently together with anybody other than the complete unincorporated areas. So their phrase Better Together is actually stupid af and should be pointed out to these dumbasses every time they speak. We aren’t together now.
2) the old rich white people, who lean liberal or have high property values already, know that if this happens it means higher taxes on their property and means that they actually have to follow through with paying for what they are getting through city services. They voted for this racebaiter to be our mayor president so they should reap what they sow.
3) business will flock to stg because that’s where anybody who cares about raising a family will live in this area. So yes when cost of living is factored in business would be enticed by a good public school system that is a good size with low crime.
Property taxes inside the city limits of Baton Rouge will increase to fund the shitty schools. Once that happens people inside the city my start voting no on these other excessive taxes like the library system that’s flushed with cash or the corrupt Council on Aging tax that’s nothing more than a slush fund for the most corrupt judge in Baton Rouge’s daughter.

You moved to a city that’s 90% white.

I can understand both sides of the argument, but honestly, I’m not in a position to cast stones. I moved to a suburb of Houston, and my kids are zoned to excellent public schools. Every Louisiana transplant that I meet seems equally baffled by seeing government actually function properly.

While Scottsdale is 81.1% white(and I haven't always lived in Scottsdale and may not always live there in the valley)....several surrounding PHX areas in PHX metro are not. Many of those areas might be 50% white...yet still many of those areas have their shite together.
