Update on the police dog that was supposed to be sold at auction

I was curious if there had been a resolution and thought others might be, too.

A retired cop whose beloved K-9 partner was set to be sold at auction can now rest easy.
Matt Hickey, who retired from the police force in Marietta, Ohio, last week, was able to purchase his police dog, Ajax, from the department for $1, he confirmed to The Huffington Post.
For the past week, Hickey had been afraid he’d be separated from his canine companion forever -- a situation that would be devastating for both man and dog. The two had been police partners for three years, and had developed a deep professional and personal relationship.
“He’s with me 24/7,” Hickey said on Wednesday. “He goes with me on my vacation; there’s a tight bond. I’m his pack leader.”

That's it?
I thought the article was going to say they had been together like 8-10 years or some shite.

That was the problem. The dog was considered too young to retire.

Then why were they auctioning it off instead of reassigning it?

Hickey went on to add, "Shoot, I can make him 'alert' anytime. Me and him put a buttload of hippies behind bars on account of 'suspicion'."

Nah, the dog has been with the one guy so long, I doubt it'd be useful to anyone else.
How's the dog gonna learn the new guy's tells anyway?

What a great looking GSD - love the straight back working-line form of that dog.

I'm glad he got to keep him, in all seriousness.

Nothing wrong with this imo. Looking like a druggie probably means you're a druggie

I am all for the relationship between a man and a dog but...
Given that the cost of those dogs with training is in the tens of thousands of dollars and that the dog had years of service life left... I would be fricking pissed if I was a taxpayer in that jurisdiction. FWIW, the dogs can be reassigned no matter how much the current handler says they can't be. I know of ones personally that have been through two or three handlers.

It depends, really. A lot of these dogs are self-trained by the operator.
There really isn't a solid, universally recognized curriculum for police dogs, unlike those dogs that are trained for the military.
A dog 10 years old or so is pretty geriatric most of the time.
Not sure of the dog's age here, tbh.
