Also, if you are not married be prepared to live in the barracks with people constantly in your shite making sure it's clean and with the ability to come in for inspection whenever they want.

It's always better to be the idiot in charge than an idiot following orders.

Wasn't older when I joined (22), but knew a few who enlisted when they were around 27-30. The biggest and only con you need to know is that you will be getting shite from people a lot younger than you with a lot less life experience. You would be a 28 year old PFC/LCpl taking orders from some 20-22 yr old Cpl or from an officer fresh out of college.

If you attend basic, there will be plenty of older guys. You'll be surprised how many guys had to go in to provide for their families, just had a new baby and wanted to take care of it, or just was at a dead end in life. You'll actually be looked at by the Drill Sergeants with a bit more respect usually, as long as you display your maturity. They will usually let you take charge of the platoon and also because if he has a degree, he'll go in as E-4 and already outrank most in the platoon.

Once you're to your unit, you'll meet plenty of people your age, whether that be lower enlisted or when you make the NCO corp, you'll be good friends with them. It's really not bad at all.

Pretty much impossible to go straight to OCS unless you are lucky enough to go street to seat and that's pilots only. Or if you have a higher learning such as lawyer, RN or MD.

....I enlisted LANG at 27.

Took very little shite at Benning Basic. DS's left me alone because I was always squared away and quiet as a church mouse. But they gave tons of shite to all the teen's I beat in the runs. "WHY ARE YOU ALL LETTING THAT GERIATRIC BEAT YOU???"

I mean maybe. I'm at what most ppl would call a great job, I'm doing well, but feel zero pride in it.

It's less like I'm missing something, and more like I'd at least be allowed to be an active man doing dangerous things, as opposed to sit in this chair and be a desk jockey.

Former military guy here, it is silly to enlist if you have a degree. Go officer.

Hard to oveerstate this.

There was a Marine Major in charge of a detachment at Huachuca that would shoot some 3 gun matches with us at a range in Sierra Vista. Sometimes he'd bring his E-2's out there to reset/tape up targets targets for us. All were probably 18/19. I couldn't imagine having to hang out with those goofy arse, selfie-taking kids all day, every day.

I'm really not opposed to officer, just being a civilian it seems like officers typically just have civilian jobs but are in the military.

It's really not that exciting. You'll spend 75% of your time attending classes and fricking off in the motor pool.

You'll feel no greater pride than when you put on the uniform everyday, it is a nice feeling. Family and friends will treat you with love like you never knew as well

I can see that getting old, I can barely stand the maturity of my peers let alone 18-19 year olds. But then again maybe I'd have a positive influence on them.

And I'd definitely want an active outdoors, sneaking around in the woods kinda job. Fitness has always been a staple in my life.

It depends on the job.

If I was young enough to go to flight school, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

You can also look into the Coast Guard officer corps. It'd be pretty awesome captaining a ship at age 32 going off to rescue a sailboat of hot wives.
