Look into joining the Guard. There was one kid from my class at basic that went straight to "real" Army OCS from Basic even though he was Guard. And was going to return to his Guard unit. If the Guard won't arrange that you can always pick a MOS with a short school and they can send you to OCS after that.

Garrison life in active duty sucks. Deployment is where it's at.
Guard is nice cause it's drill or deployment. Except for natural disasters and such.

But the Guard can fix your itch without having to live at Fort Drum or God forbid Korea right now!

Oh and it's 6 year commitment for new officers.

I've definitely thought about those. Specifically SF (green beret).

You can get plenty of outdoor time as an officer - without all the bitch work. Well, there's always bitch work as a junior officer, but it ain't bitch work like an E4.

If influence on the younger soldiers is important to you, that's even more reason to be an officer. You won't be able to shoot the shite with them on their level (you wouldn't want to anyway), but you may have a chance to work with and mold a few into being better soldiers and people. The military needs leaders.

It depends on the job.

Yeah. If you do service support (cook, clerk, etc) you'll have an actual job to do in garrison. If you're combat arms or support(MI, signal, etc), you can't really do your job unless you're deployed. But if you're signed for any type of vehicle, you're gonna waste time in the motor pool with motor maintenance, layouts, and other assorted shite.

and full disclosure, all my experience comes from the army side, I can't speak for the other services.

Honestly it really isn't all its cracked up to be. Coming out of basic as E-1 to E-4 get ready to be put on shite details for a while and pretty much hate life everyday until you rank up. Then once you rank up you'll still hate life but be able to let your anger out on privates so its a little better.

Every now and then you'll do cool shite that you signed up for but 95% of the time you'll be doing bullshite. I wouldn't fall for all war movie propaganda, it's not like that.

Edit: Or maybe I just feel this way because I'm an E-4 grunt in the LARNG. Active duty would probably be better

Some old Israeli. He's probably the last defense security guard for a bakery in Tel Aviv.

I went through basic down in Benning with a guy in his late 30's to early 40s. He did fine. You'll be fine.

Don't let anyone talk you out of going Active if that's what you want to do. Reservists and guys in the guard catch more shite than anyone else from Active duty soldiers. If it ends up working out better for you to go that route than do so, but don't do it because some guy on the internet told you to. Get used to being referred to as a Weekend warrior if you do end up training with Active Duty units.

It's petty, but it's the Military. Everyone wants to have the biggest dick at the table and the amount of shite talking is on another level.

Buddy of mine is an officer in the army and got assigned to get a masters degree in English. He spent two years on an SEC campus just taking classes - didn't even have to teach.

Now he teaches at West Point and will do so for three.

I thought that was a cool assignment. He did three tours in Iraq though beforehand.

So far I've gathered I should go for officer. Do they really care what you do in the civilian world? Or do you just sign a contract and then they train you?

I'm sure there are opinions on whether I should join AF, Navy, Army, Marines, or CG

My first thought when I read the OP:

Good luck if you do.

Go in the AF as a WSO...

Os do not get as into the weeds in training, but you will be asked to grasp a bunch of topics, and learn who the belly button is to get shite done
