Your passport is scanned so they probably have a record but after that you drive right in….pre-covid at least

have you never traveled before? Your border crossing gets recorded. Both ways.

Plenty of times - and no border crossing does not always get recorded - that’s why I asked because I haven’t traveled internationally since before Covid
No reason to be a smart arse

Canada is going to check and make sure you don't have any DUI convictions before letting you in the country now. You also have to prove you are vaccinated and submit proof to their system before you can cross.

And this is assuming he crossed into Canada legally, correct?

It gets cold AF in Canada. I'd go to Mexico.

Agree plus closer to Florida. Just thought he may have some family in New York that might’ve helped him (although they are from Long Island)

They don’t check everyone for DUI convictions. I’ve known people who have gotten into Canada with a DUI. They said it’s a luck of the draw type of situation. The border patrol doesn’t check every single person passing through into Canada.

I’m thinking through what I’d do in this situation, and while Vietnam is still my sane worst case scenario provided everything goes to hell in a legal sort of manner, they require a visa to even visit. Can’t wait around for 10-12 days waiting for that and for the US government to also be alerted you’re applying for a visa.
I know one place that doesn’t require one, does not have an extradition agreement with the US, is rightly pissed at us, and given my rantings and fears people would suspect this would be the last country I’d go to: Taiwan. No visa process and it’s going to be a war zone in a couple of months. While I may get caught in the crossfire, no Chinese or Taiwanese soldier will deliberately kill me or take me prisoner. I’m just worthless to them and not worth either of their time for an American intervention. And I get great food and speak the language. It could be a lot of fun in a horrific way.
…Well that or Indonesia, but I think an Indonesian may deliberately kill me. At least I’d get to live history in Taiwan. My mentality on this:

they keep a record every time you cross.

they always get recorded. when you go through the border, you are "checking-in". you are checked out when you return.

Being from Long Island, did he canoe or kayak?
Could he know enough about New York State to cross internationally by canoe across the St.Lawrence River or close to it?

It’s possible, but his crossing has a busy Canadian highway where someone would have seen him during the day. He could have crossed at night, but I think someone would have seen him during the day. Plus he would have either had to abandon a car near the border or had an accomplice drop him off with a kayak.

Ahem. Many of us here have lived in New Orleans. Chose the right part of a small city or town, leave the key in the car with enough gas to get it moved. Let 'nature take its course'.
I'm almost surprised he didn't take the white van to the southside of Chicago, and leave the key in it.

Canada maybe, but not necessarily Mexico
And overseas - it depends on the country
