We don't know if an investigator came out and explicitly said Ward was hitting someone else. I already explained how various arguments could be construed as some sort of fight. Hell, he may have actually been hitting a woman too.
The bottom line is that no official reports on how the altercation got started =/= this report is false.

The officers and witnesses told the media that there were witnesses that saw Gasser shoot JM outside the vehicle at point blank while he begged for his life

Would it be fair to presume that since it appears that the deceased had diabetes that was not controlled properly that Ward's lawyers will try to use that to their advantage? I know the cause of death was listed in the thread as blunt force trauma to the head but there was a statement by his family that his organs failed.

Don't know about LA but in common law states R v Hayward (the Eggshell rule) would apply (or jurisdictional case law or codified law that follows Hayward) and you take the victim as you find them. If you have a thin skull (eggshell) and I hit you with a blow that would barely harm an average adult but your head cracks like and egg and you die it is not a defense for me.
ETA you also have to be careful with this sort of argument (even when it works within the law) emphasizing how broken down the victim was when you have a 6' strapping 25yo who beat him to death is a recipe for disaster in front of a jury

People are hammering ward because he clearly seems to have assaulted a man and is looking at being charged with murder. I have no clue how his looks matter given those facts.

The current rumor is the perp was in some sort of altercation with a woman. The victim got involved to stop the altercation. The perp beat the victim, kicking him twice while he was on the ground, and he succumb to his injuries 12 days later.
