I've been wondering about something I've heard during the news coverage. They keep saying that some passages along the escape route are too small to fit a person with scuba gear (tank). That's a pretty small opening.
How did the group get to where they are now? Did they make their way thru these tiny passages only in a desperate attempt to escape incoming water? Or did they actually make their way thru as part of a "fun cave exploration"?
It's possible that they took a much longer route to get to where they are now, but it's too long for diving.

The gas requirements to get oh, 30 people in and 43 out will be tremendous.

At least two safety divers per person. They wouldnt all be going at the same time though.

They need to be on the phone with Michels from Brownsville, WI.

Yep. Guys, it's easy to think you can get them out just by swimming and breathing from tanks....its not that easy. I'm experienced at diving, but cave diving in almost zero xisibikity water and tight spaces is something I wouldnt entertain. It's so easy for a diver to get anxiety and freak out in tight spaces.and once that happens, things go south quick. Once the dive starts, there is NO turning back.
A retired navy seal/diver just died down there...wrap your head around that for a second.
This situation is as dire as dire gets.

Heard an old SEAL on Fox yesterday saying they’d have to give the kids sedatives, I guess to keep them from freaking out. He made it clear he wouldn’t want to do it.

Imagine asking your kid to crawl thru an air duct from one end of your home to another, in the dark. Now add cold water, zero visibilty and uneven surfaces and very limited or no communication
Thru should be drilling straight down to them with an oil rig with a wide arse bit and pull em up that way.
My guess is there will be deaths if the use driving to get em out. They are about to be rushed to make a decision which will complicate things even more.
That coach that led the down there needs to be shot

Yeah, I don't understand why they haven't started drilling, e.g. Chilean minders in 2010.

I've been vaguely following.. 2 miles in is a long way. Did it get dark and they couldn't tell which was was in/out?

This is a very popular destination to hike and they've been there loads of times before. It isn't like this coach just decided they were going to play Indiana Jones on some unknown cave for team building. It was the unexpected flooding that messed everything up.

What a callous and impudent post given the circumstances of the situation in Thailand.
No where in any of my posts on this thread have I been anything but fully respectful of the dire situation these kids and rescuers are in. While some here are posting that cave diving (or even dry caving) is crazy, I am sharing a different opinion. However, I am also pointing out that this is not the la-dee-dah cave diving that I and many others enjoy. This is a monumental challenge, and VERY DANGEROUS situation.
Lots of people say "oh just dive them out", while every cave diver I know cringes at that thought...

I don't know much about drilling but its probably pretty hard get all the equipment up to and set up on the side of a mountain. Also, they don't have an exact location from the surface on their position. Chile was flat and they knew exactly where the minors were.

Elon Musk has offered to provide a length of flexible, inflatable nylon tubing to extend the full distance of the passage, through which the kids would crawl. So far no takers.

Not his fault. People explored that cave all the time and the only reason there is an issue is because the rain season started two-three weeks sooner than it usually does.

It kills me that there are boys as young as eleven in there and that there are parents experiencing pure nonstop terror right now. After reading it seems we have two possibilities , pumping the water out or drilling. If they attempt a dive , my assumption is that it is so dire that it’s the only option and they think death is imminent. I can’t imagine the stress and the choices.
I’m also worried that Thailand is such a consensus society that there will be a kind of paralyzing bureaucratic stasis. In times like this, an original thinker with balls of steel and an audacious plan is required. If too many people have their hands in this , I really fear the worst.

Musk is sending engineers to there now so they will likely see if that is a workable option.
Posted on 7/6/18 at 11:27 am to tigerbutt
Idiots. If it’s that dangerous to go in and save them, what the frick were they doing going in there in the first place?

Situations like this are reminders that we are all mother nature's bitches.
The whole world is coming together to try and get these kids out and they still might fail.
Just such a shitty situation. Praying they find a way out.
