not paywalled

The site wasn't behind a paywall for me. I don't subscribe to any online paper. I went and I could read it. I just wanted to help them out.

The vessel should have had one EPIRB,

It did. Evidently, according to the survivor and the number of vessels that passed him by, it didn't work.

this guy is advocating for each individual to also carry a smaller individual EPIRB, which may or may not be a good idea. I certainly think it is a good one.

Yep, and he's been doing so for nearly a decade. They cost around $400 each (off of the shelf at the consumer level) and aren't hard to come by. Redundancy in safety isn't a bad thing. Why the pushback by the Coast Guard and the industry?

It isn't behind a paywall for me, either. I was wondering why your posts were "marked unreadable".

NTSB has issued a preliminary report. NTSB Report

NTSB states
quote:

A weather report emailed to the vessel at 0702 that morning predicted afternoon winds at 9–12 knots from the southeast, with 3-foot seas

quote:

About 1530, a rain squall passed over the vessel as it transited the open waters of the gulf. Visibility dropped and the winds increased significantly, so crew decided to lower the Seacor Power’s legs to the seafloor to hold the vessel in position until the storm passed. When the legs began to descend, the crewmember at the helm attempted to turn the vessel into the winds. Before the turn was completed, the Seacor Power heeled to starboard and capsized.

The boat left the dock at 1200....got to the mouth of the pass at 1400 last transmission was at 1630

They were already 2+ hours into open water before they capsized.

What happened between 1200 and 1630

Report says capsized at 1541. It left the dock at 1330.

Squall hit at 1530 and 11 min later they were done for.

I know nothing about winds and seas ... are those expected conditions anything that should have kept them from heading out?

The weather forecast for that day was for some spotty showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Winds were supposed to be 9-12 mph and 3-foot seas. Those conditions wouldn't keep me out of the water and I only have an 18.5-foot bay boat. The line of storms that pushed south into the gulf that day was very strong and produced a ton of wind. A wake low developed and really increased the winds and seas far beyond what was forecasted. I live in cut off which is about 30 miles north of Fourchon and I can tell you that the storms that came through here that afternoon were very unusual. THe storms continued to strengthen as the complex moved offshore. If you haven't watched the shrimp boat video from that day in the same general vicinity as the Secor Power then you really should watch it. That video will show what conditions were like just off the coast that afternoon.

Exactly what I was wondering ... I do remember that it seemed to come up suddenly. And yes I've seen the shrimp boat video -- frightening to me to say the least.

So Captain did nothing "wrong" by leaving I would guess. I've said it before, I'd just hate for a dead man to not be able to defend himself and get placed with all blame.

Tragic situation no matter how you look at it.

I believe that vessel was supposed to be able to handle up to 5' seas.

I saw a post on NOLA.com, but couldn't copy it, that they were trying to jack up when they went over.

Yeah sounds about right bc the last transmission on AIS was at 1538 if I recall

quote:

It left the dock at 1330.

Don’t think that’s accurate. AIS shows it left the dock around 1200 and hit the pass around 1330. Which makes sense, it would take about 1.5hrs-2hrs to travel where they were docked to the pass. I’m mobile so I can’t look at the track history right now but if you really want I posted the track with the timeline earlier in this thread.

You go out in the gulf in 3 footers in a 18.5 bay boat?
