I didn't know what a liftboat was until yesterday. Was he THE captain?

I heard or read the term micro burst....or some other terminology that described the event as it did pop up as more intense than foretasted.

However, the Weather Service had issued a series of seven special marine warnings for locations in southeast Louisiana, including Port Fourchon, that began before the lift boat left Port Fourchon at 1:30 p.m., on its way to a drilling site at Main Pass 138, about 40 miles east of Venice. Each message warned of tropical storm force winds - 39 mph or greater - accompanied by "suddenly higher waves." The warnings were aimed at the effects of both the original line of thunderstorms and the high winds accompanying the wake low moving south into the Gulf.
“Make sure all on board are wearing life jackets. Return to safe harbor if possible. Large hail could result in injury and damage to boats ... vessels and oil rigs,” the first warning said.
At 2:57 p.m., a marine warning was issued for a large area along the Gulf Coast, including Grand Isle and Port Fourchon and extending to the lower Atchafalaya River. The warning extended 20 nautical miles into the Gulf, the area where the Seacor vessel was cruising.
“Boats could sustain damage or capsize. Make sure all on board are wearing life jackets. Return to safe harbor if possible. Large hail could result in injury and damage to boats ... vessels and oil rigs,” the warning said.

Has everyone been rescued?

Buddy of mine is down in Fusion. Supposedly divers have been delayed all morning due to weather. They are now on location but have yet to jump. Weather will simmer down this afternoon so updates should begin to trickle in I’d assume.

I just checked AIS and there are 35 vessels around the wreck...including a half dozen or so Cutters...HOS has a bunch out there too

Wake lows aren't uncommon, and outside of when they first develop they can be tracked. We had one in South-cental TN/North AL a few years ago behind a North to South moving line of storms that were strong but not severe. The storms came through, then the winds picked up. There were sustained winds of 45+ with gusts over 70. Fortunately, it died out before it got to where we live, but wrecked shite North of us.
All you had to do to track it was wait for the wind damage reports to roll in. There were plenty.

Have you seen a map with the location of the wreck on it? I'm wondering how the storms moving offshore will impact efforts. This is from the SPC discussion today:
quote:
...North central/northeast Gulf coast today... The stronger convection and associated outflow have moved offshore this morning. Anvil shading into the FL Big Bend, and the richer moisture remaining offshore across the eastern Gulf of Mexico, suggest that the stronger storms (and attendant severe threat) will likewise remain offshore.

It was on the weather channel all day yesterday.

The national media has been too quiet on this story.
If recall correctly, it took a day or two before Deepwater Horizon became national tragedy.
Then as time went on, even the national anchors led off their newscasts from Louisiana.
So far not even a peep from the Coast Guard directly. Just bits and pieces passed on to the local media to feed them something.
Funny JBE hasn’t tried to get into the spotlight and hold a press conference even though this is mainly a coast guard operation.
