Take a look at the port leg that has cranes wrapped around both forward legs
Now look at the port leg sticking out of the waster...
What happened to the crane? Can it slide off?

You haven't lived until you board a helicopter that has to hover because the wind wants to push it off the pad. I'm not big, I had to get get someone to hold me so the wind wouldn't blow my arse overboard lol. Then the helicopter doesn't take off straight up, it's like it falls over and then takes off. Your heart skips a few beats with the turbulence. I loved helicopters. Get there fast and get home fast.

An air log helicopter blew off the pad during lunch one day because the pilot didn't strap it down while he went eat.

They had a pretty checkered past.

No chance. But we don't know the shape of the jack-up when it left port. Was it stripped and being moved to another yard for outfitting? Was it just getting put back in commission? Was it being stacked? I don't know. And I'll say this, I've haven't been on one before where the cranes were around the legs but it would shock me if that were possible. No way those cranes, when installed, aren't securely fastened.

It had just come in from a 90 day job...it was still classed and in service. They dont just remove these cranes for the hell of it

Over tourque was the word the pilot would use. Hop Hop Hop on over to the edge of the helipad and swan dive. Rotors poppin' like a muther fricker.

Not sure there is no chance the crane didn't slide off. How secured can it be? The leg has to pass through the base on the regular! Combined with some serious force during capsizing I wouldn't be surprised if any securing present failed.
On the leg you can still see the crane deck & the spinning ring thing which the crane rotates on. This was addressed earlier in the thread.

Yes, its a ringer mounted crane around the leg.....I'm just going to assume the crane came off the ringer and slid down the leg into the water

It's not that bad as long as you're only doing it when it can safely be done. With that said, I have done it in not so safe conditions. You should not do it if you haven't been through a training on it and should not do it in any seas at all if you haven't had experience doing it in calm seas.

Me too. How in the hell can that be the best way?
I was thinking, "surely they can't just mean a rope they hold onto and then swing out there". But yup, that's it

I don't believe that's the crane deck. That's the walkway around the leg so the crew can grease the legs. That cup you see above it is the grease trap. Those legs aren't painted black. That's grease.

Tgrbaitn.
I’m with you in that the crane slid down the leg.
I think it slid off. Lot of counterweights, booms swinging, etc. Those are 185 Ton Cranes.
For those not familiar with cranes they sit on a turntable and gravity holds them down due to a counterweight system. They have hook rollers to some what secure it.
All that weight turning over pulled it loose from the turret/turntable. IMO
