It depends on the lounge. I’ve been in some first rate ones that are much better than a bar, particularly when traveling internationally.. But I agree with you for most of them.

Anyone else just prefer hanging with the hoi polloi and knocking back $15 beers with all their assorted hustle and bustle, versus the sterile sort of doctor’s office feeling environment of the Executive Lounges and Milage Clubs with their fruit trays and bubbly wines, and constant laptop keyboard clicking background noise.

Almost missed a flight at KATL because I was having such a good time drinking with random commoners at the Hawks Bar that I lost track of time.

Prefer the gory days of airlines when Stew's gave the beaver for free in the Club Lounge

They were better before almost anyone could get into them. Airlines have started to restrict access to fend off the crowds. I watched Tiger win the 2019 Masters from a Delta Sky Club at KSLC. Free drinks and a chair right in front of the TV.

At least one airport does it right, in Vegas you can play slot machines right in the terminal. I think Reno is the same.

I once spent close to 12 hours in the Senator lounge for Lufthansa in FRA (on purpose.) I was pretty sure I was going to start getting mail. I ate a bunch and of course had a lot to drink. That was the middle of a IAH-FRA-JNB outbound flight. I scheduled it on purpose so I could ride in an A380 and a 747-8 back to back

Back in my single days, airport bars were the go to. Bedded so many chicks I met at the airport.

The United Club is only good for peace and quiet if you need to get some work done.

I know Amex has their lounges, and Capital One is building out some lounges at a few airports. But unlike Amex, Crapital One is charging 90 dollars for access even for card holders.

Yeah, I can't help but think there's some look at me in a good percentage of the folks with the piece in their ear and laptop out talking loud enough for everyone to hear. I always chuckle.

Good to know. Unfortunately, I don’t have that level of credit needs or travel often enough or fly to Dallas, Denver, or DC where they currently have lounges. They are adding some in Vegas and 2 NYC airports.

It is funny they didn’t open one in MSY only because of the Super Bowl this year and the fact that many of their banking customers reside in New Orleans and have a large office presence downtown.

Hell, no. I fly almost every weekend. Give me the lounges so I can get away from the insanity and not have to wait in lines for the bathroom.

Yes, Reno has slots.

I recently had a layover in Vegas and had to walk from one terminal to another.

There are some many damn machines, it is like navigating through a maze.

Since im upper middle class, I prefer the bar. There, I’m well towards the top percentile of clientele. If I somehow find myself in a lounge, it’s clear to everyone there that I don’t belong.

Day drinking and people watching at the airport is my favorite thing to do.

MSY offers a free day pass - you can bar hop and people watch all day long. Not as fun when you can't get reimbursed though. On a recent trip with long weather delays we hit up Emeril's, Mondo, Cure and Ye Olde College Inn. Couldn't muster the courage to submit more than one for reimbursement though.

I nominate TulaneLSU to do a Top Ten MSY bar and restaurant edition.

MSY day pass
quote:

MSY Guest Pass is a program that allows non-ticketed visitors to enjoy the more than 40 concessions post-security. Registered non-ticketed visitors will be able to venture past the security checkpoint to eat and shop. The selection of shops range from locals like Fleurty Girl and Dirty Coast to high end digs like Brighton. Dining options are available from award-winning chefs like Emeril Lagasse, John Folse, Michael Gullotta, Susan Spicer, and more.
The MSY Guest Pass Program is available 7 days a week, 11AM to 8PM daily.

My perspective is of someone who doesn’t fly super frequently and when I do pretty much never have anything more than an hour or two layover, such that I can still see an airport bar as sort of a fun novelty, while the times I’ve been in the clubs, they just feel like bland doctor’s office waiting rooms with a fruit tray and wine.

Admittedly, if I was going through airports weekly, I might see the benefits of the lounge/club environments more often, but could still see myself wanting the other option at times as well.

This is an embarrassing story.

5 years ago I had to fly to Helsinki. My flight was OKC -> Charlotte -> Heathrow -> Helsinki.

My layover in London was almost 8 hours. We arrived in the morning so I had an English breakfast and a few bloodies. Then I found a pub in the terminal where I had lunch and a few beers.

It comes time to check in for my flight to Helsinki. They're checking passports and this stern Finnish woman says "I'm sorry, sir, but your journey ends here." I said, "You're kidding, right?". She asks "Do I look like I'm kidding?" She told me my passport would expire in 2 months, and entry into Finland requires that your passport be valid for at least 6 months.

This as a Sunday afternoon. I checked with American Airlines, and they suggested going to the US Embassy in London on Monday and requesting an emergency extension. I checked into it via my laptop, but found out that one does not simply walk into a US Embassy. You have to have an appointment. And they were booked out for 2 weeks.

So, I went back to the American counter and asked them to book me on the next flight back to Oklahoma City, which was through Dallas.

They were even able to retrieve my checked bag and make sure it was on the same flight home.

The best news is, the American representative told me that "The agent in Oklahoma City should never have allowed you to board the plane. They are supposed to know the rules. We will refund the cost of your flight."

That was nice, but I felt like total shite on that flight back from London to Dallas.
