There are so many of these. How in a time where the country was way more Christian than it is now, did they decide to make the mascot of colleges the "Blue Devils, or Demons, or Sun Devils etc?" Just seems weird bc I can't see a group of Christian people saying "yea let's make our mascot the demons." Is there a good explanation for this?

This is the number one issue facing America, and I for one am going to hold my breath until these mascot names take on the Godly tone that pleases me.

So glad that we can only discuss the most existential things on an off topic message board.

Duke Blue Devils are named after a fighter squadron, I believe.
All the rest were obviously created by heathens...

Because decades ago people weren’t butthurt little bitches that cried about every little thing they perceived to be offensive. On both sides of the political aisle.

Back then people weren't scared of words.

Duke is United Methodist and they are the Blue Devils.
Wake Forrest is Baptist and they are the Demon Deacons.

Clearly a missed opportunity to name mascot the Demon Cocks

1987 or so, Pope John Paul II made a trip to Phoenix, well, Tempe, and said a mass in Sun Devil Stadium. Everyone saw the irony and had fun with it. Seems like they had to cover up the mascot though...

Satan also works in mysterious ways.

Typically a mascot was chosen that the opposition would fear. BTW, believe it or not demons and devils were a thing before Jesus.

During World War I the Chasseurs Alpins, nicknamed “les Diables Bleus,” were well known French soldiers. They first gained attention when their unique training and alpine knowledge was counted upon to break the stalemate of trench warfare in their native region of the French Alps.

on a positive note, at least the Tampa Bay Devil Rays dropped the Devil part of their name

I always think that’s an oxymoron.

LSU Fighting Tigers are named after a Satanic cult that held secret tiger fights & wagered on them
