It is up for debate and we don't know for sure, but I don't think there's much to suggest the flight was oversold, and probably more to suggest it was not.

There is plenty to suggest the flight was oversold. You wont see the difference in oversold and overbooked. United has an out, because if they didn't hundreds of passengers would have been able to sue otherwise.

Same to suggest it was not, fwiw.

Again, what is the prescribed check-in time? It's not logical to say after everyone is on the plane. And the contract suggests it is actually 30-45 minutes before check in, if I recall.

So again, there's also evidence to suggest oversold doesn't apply either.

Dumbass should have gotten off the damn plane. None of this would have happened.

Actually, the dumbasses shouldn't have overbooked the flight. This never would have happened.

Or, the dumbasses shouldn't wait to the last minute to try and fly their own employees.

Seriously? In what world was this a smart business decision?

DOT required that crew to get to the next destination to do pre-flight. United had no choice

Now you're reaching. Check-in is just to let the airline know you are at the airport. Checking in lets the airline know they cannot give your seat to a standby passenger or employee (not the must ride employees in this situation). Checking in will assign you a seat to speed up manifest makeup, that is all. The seat will usually be the one you chose, if you did. Checking in is not an end all be all list. The manifest is not finalize in any manner until the gate agent hands it to the pilot and shuts the door. They cannot depart without knowing who is in what seat. They can arrange seating as they see fit before departure.

So no, there's no evidence to suggest oversold doesn't apply because they obviously didn't have enough available seats.

United has already publicly clarified that the flight was not considered oversold.

No, they said it wasn't overbooked. Overbooked means having more reservations than seats on a plane

Really? If you're going to correct me on something I've already quoted in this thread, at least look it up first.

quote:

“The flight was not oversold,” United spokeswoman Maddie King said Tuesday. “There was a United Express crew that needed to get to Louisville to prevent a flight down the line from canceling.”

Am I?

Check-In Time Limits - UA has the right to cancel reservations (whether or not confirmed), deny boarding and/or refuse the acceptance of checked baggage of any Passenger who fails to present himself/herself within the applicable check-in or loading gate time limits for Passengers and/or Baggage.

Is it really reaching to say the "prescribed check-in time" may be the same as what is mentioned in the quote?

The manifest is not finalize in any manner until the gate agent hands it to the pilot and shuts the door.
Does the manifest = prescribed check in time?

Not sure why you thought I was reaching.

Why? Now we are getting somewhere. What would they need a crew moved for?

Measure your response.

Let's regroup here.

On Monday I believe, UA spokesperson said the flight was not overbooked. Most posters on the other side of this argument said that was irrelevant because it was oversold.

On Tuesday, a UA spokesperson said the flight was not oversold.

So back to square one, under what provision was the passenger being removed?

Then they had 4 less seats to sell

United is telling us the flight was not oversold, and you're arguing against UA, who has every reason to want to say it's oversold?

After trying to correct me and say that United said overbooked, not oversold

Like usual, he didn't know WTF he was talking about, yet still felt like acting otherwise

Direct link to United? Because I've seen the terms used both ways in titles and articles in the media, and we know they get things wrong. What term did United use? The only term I see is oversold, in context to how they will review oversold situations.

LINK

quote:

This will include a thorough review of crew movement, our policies for incentivizing volunteers in these situations, how we handle oversold situations and an examination of how we partner with airport authorities and local law enforcement

hmmm, I guess they are saying it was an oversold situation after all.
