If it happens as little as you claim, then why is it viewed as no big deal? If it were that uncommon, I believe most people would side with the paying customers here.

I don't care that the guy is a doctor, the point of that is that a $800 voucher in some circumstances is a joke to him. If he bills $30,000 in a day and misses a day of work you think he cares about $800? That's the point. But also being a doctor he could have a life saving procedure to get to.

So everyone, please stop saying this is just another random, daily overbooking. that is 100 percent untrue.

So forcing paying customers off a plane because you want to put employees on it is an acceptable practice?

This would have never happened on Continental.

Noooo it's absolutely not acceptable. That's my point.

Denying boarding because of overbooking is a terrible situation but it happens from time to time.

What happened on that place was much, much, much worse. It's well beyond a "typical" overbooking situation.

Once you are on the plane, that should be the end of it.

Is Chicago a hub for United? If so, this is even worse. I'm guessing it is because they had an extra flight crew.

How in the heck does that happen?

I'm going to guess the following happened:

- Flight to SDF from another UA hub was delayed. Crew flying that flight were very close to timing out. They did so a few minutes before the final ORD-SDF flight left.

- Only remaining flight to SDF that night that had a crew available was this ORD flight. The AA flight from ORD to SDF left around the same time and was likely full.

Perfect storm of minimal options and deciding between inconveniencing 4 with IDB vs. cereating a larger IROP problem on Monday. What they didn't account for was a passenger to go crazy.

I still agree they should have gone higher with the VDB's before IDBing process. And I still agree United is shite. But people are completely ignorant on this process. Including the crazy passenger.

Because people's IQ drop about 50 points right when they arrive at the airport.

IDB stats are reported to the DOT and available to view. UA IDB'd 0.4 passengers per 10,000 in 2016.

IDBs resulting from United employees are a terrible business practice. No two ways about it.

i had issues with a flight leaving SD last year and since the Dallas-LC flight only runs twice a day, i had to choose if i wanted to be stuck in SD (with a $500 voucher + free hotel/staying with my friend again) or risk being stuck in Dallas (where i'd be fricked and alone). i took the voucher and they bumped me up to super nice seats on the flight the next morning so i was cool. also had another round of relations

I'm not ignorant at all about it, it's absurd. A voucher costs the airlines what about 20% at most? What are fees and taxes? Around there?

Anyone worth anything doesn't care about $800 of they have to be somewhere important. Then United had an issue and they are offering up maybe $200 of their cost to make up for it? That's BS. If United goes up on the vouchers to $1500-2000 they get volunteers. That's how it works. That was their easiest option.
