Tragedy struck on a United flight from Houston to New York City, when a dog in a TSA-compliant pet carrier died after a flight attendant forced its owner to store the animal and its carrier in an overhead bin for the duration of the four-hour Monday flight.

First reported by travel blogger The Points Guy, United has since claimed full responsibility for the “tragic accident.”

According to passenger Maggie Gremminger, she and others heard the black French bulldog barking initially during the four-hour flight, and were horrified to learn the animal had passed away later in the trip, she told People.

Gremminger told People once the dog was found dead, the flight attendant became "frazzled" and insisted she did not know there was a live animal in the carrier.

This was a tragic accident that should never have occurred, as pets should never be placed in the overhead bin. We assume full responsibility for this tragedy and express our deepest condolences to the family and are committed to supporting them,” she said.

“We are thoroughly investigating what occurred to prevent this from ever happening again,” Schmerin added.

The cause of death is not yet known, but, while the overhead compartments are not air-tight, lack of oxygen may have been a factor.

Probably because most flight attendants have their heads up their arse.

They're either compartment Nazis, or they dgaf and look in lala land.

Whoever runs the PR Department at United Airlines must be addicted to Xanax at this point.

Agree, I would have refused to put my animal in the overhead compartment. Wonder if the carrier was too big for under the seat. I would stroke out if my dog died like that!!!

That was one of the way the terrorists won on 9-11.

It made people that it was a smart idea to give these morons the powers of Sky Gods.

They should have never made the passenger put the puppy in there, but can the airlines please stop allowing idiots to fly with pets? I don't like having someone else's damn dog on me or under my feet during a flight. It's also ridiculous what they allow on for "comfort pets" these days.

Until you go to medical school and become a psychologist you can't say what can and can't be an emotional support animal. If my snake squeezes you feed him a mouse

I wouldn't subject my pet to air travel unless it was absolutely necessary, but I don't mind other people's pets on board.

nb4: pets don't need to travel unless being relocated, certainly not in the passenger cabin, and the overhead bin did not kill that mutt

I absolutely DO NOT BELIEVE that the flight attendant didn’t know there was an animal in the animal carrier. Because what normal dog owner would not only not make it known there was a dog in there, but just immediately comply with the request to stuff it up in the bin?
