Gildan brand shirts are quality. I don't wear traditional undershirts, but do wear T-shirts most of the time and their product wears and holds up nice.

George or George's brand at the Walmarks makes some really good soft ones without tags, cheap too. They don't come in packs of 3 or 4 like Hanes and others do though.
Wearing a long sleeved under a short sleeved shirt as we speak, just like its the 90s.

When you look for cotton undershirts, look for combed cotton, much softer than not combed.
