Why in the hell does an American company spell "armour" with a "u?"
Aside from that, I just read about the company. The founder literally created the company in his mother's basement. I really need to quit my job and tinker with ideas.

Likely because Armor was used somewhere else.

I like their shoes, they don't hurt my feet like nikes.

"Oh, and the reason we added the 'U' in 'Armour' is that I was skeptical at the time about whether this whole internet thing would stick," Plank told The Post. "So I thought the phone number 888-4ARMOUR was much more compelling than 888-44ARMOR. I wish there was a little more science or an entire marketing study behind it, but it was that simple."

When he was registering the name of his new company in 1996, he was setting up the toll-free number and he thought that 888-4ARMOUR was more compelling than 888-44ARMOR. At the time, the Internet was just rising in importance for commerce and Plank said he wasn’t sure “whether this whole internet thing would stick.” Therefore, the toll-free number was important to get right.

Because when the company was founded he wanted a recognizable toll-free number.

Both Nike and UA are incredible start-up stories.

Yeah, I'm amazed at what this guy made from a business started in a basement and selling clothes out of the trunk of his car. This is the American dream for sure.

It was 1996...not 2006.

pretty sure everyone was still logging in with AOL free trial CD's back then, but yeah it's funny in hindsight.

As it related to e-commerce? It was still widely unproven. Especially given that his initial company was targeted at team sales, not the individual consumer.
Having a toll-free number that was easily recognizable was arguably more important in 1996 than a catchy domain name. And he created the domain in 1997, so it's not like he went years without denying the need to have an e-commerce platform, too.
