They are so fed up with America that they are immigrating to Belize. What’s so great about that country that makes them want to leave America now?
When did being fed up and becoming an expat a bad thing? It is one of the best perks about being a citizen of a first world nation - it is affordable as hell to say to hell with it and make a change. We have been expats in the past due in part to being fed up with the US...not fed up with politics, just the way of life which is all about chasing money and working all the damn time. We will live outside of the US at least partially when we retire...because we will be fed up with traffic, expensive living and simply doing the same shite day in and out. It is the epitome of freedom to be in a position to say "to hell with it". Literature and pop culture is literally awash with the theme....most people who dream of doing it never get to but for those who do why is it a bad thing?
If my father was able to live abroad right now there is NO WAY I would be living in the US....there is simply better places to live, as a US citizen in possession of a US Passport and the financial wherewithal to do so than the US. We would be living and working somewhere in the Caribbean or Asia.....its just a better lifestyle in either place. I love the US with all its faults....one of the reasons I appreciate the US as much as I do is because I have lived and worked in other countries...first world western democracies and the Carribean. It certainly improves one's opinion of the US. I know loads of expats and all of them agree, nothing like living outside the US to make one appreciate the US. The difference in lifestyle is very appealing if you have the financial ability to do it, and it is highly appealing if you have a US passport.
Has not got a thing in the world to do with politics, at least for me. It is all about working to live instead of living to work. It is FAR better to ride a bicycle 2 miles to work with the sun coming up over the Carribean than it is to drive a F250 30 miles one way in traffic, at least for me.

Belize is an unbelievably corrupt 3rd world shithole. You have clearly never been there.
Belize city is the most depressing thing I have ever seen in person and I have seen Juarez Mexico in person.
I have been to Belize, Belize City and have spent a lot of time in Juarez. Juarez is FANTASTIC as is Belize. Was not overly impressed with Belize City but Belize City is not what draws expats to Belize.
I get it. The US is the greatest nation on earth and many US citizens never want to leave. Most never do. The number of US citizens with a current passport passed 50% for the first time ever in October of this year. Most of those passports are used to board cruise ships and cross the Canadian / Mexico borders. There is nothing wrong with never leaving the US, most Americans never have and of those who do now only do so for short periods of time and are within a couple of time zones from where they were born. Nothing wrong with that, but there is also nothing wrong with living abroad. It certainly is not unpatriotic or un-American to live abroad...it is actually very enlightening and educational....and almost ALL Americans who do it find a whole 'nother level or respect and admiration for the US.....

I've vacationed in Key Caulker a couple of times and I would totally spend my retirement years there if I could afford it.

Belize is two countries…the coastal regions frequented by tourists which are among the most beautiful on the planet and the inland regions which are among the world’s poorest and least desirable
This, but even Belize City is a shithole and has some terrible areas. Belize isn't a country I would choose unless I was living on one of the barrier islands.

Belize gained independence from the UK in 1981. It is part of the UN and the Commonwealth, and it's considered Central America not Caribbean.
The official language is English, thus attractive for Americans.

Belize is pretty fricking awesome. I believe it's still under British rule.
I stayed at the hotel that was owned by Jerry Jeff Walker. they had his picture over the bar. When I asked about it, the bartender said, "Oh that's Meestah Jerry!"

There are people that are in for a rude awakening especially if they leave over politics. Many of these countries are great to vacation in ,but living in is a far different story. Unless a person has frick you money living in some of these places is not the paradise they expect for it to be.

Your average poster on here can't imagine what it would take to move 2 states over. Living in another country is the equivalent of colonizing Mars to them.
Nail on head.
There is so much ignorance being expressed in this thread by people who live in or near New Orleans.

I was supposed to fly to Belize City on Friday and then take a Maya Island Air puddle jumper to the island we were staying at where my wife's uncle is building his vacation house.
Visited Caye Caulker recently and saw a lot of construction on the north side of the island. Much of it was financed by Asian developers who don’t intend to live there. Your wife’s uncle might find his island paradise more crowded than he bargained for if that’s where he’s building.

Moving to another country late in life suggests a few things. Principally that you have failed to make any meaningful connections here. Leaving family, job, familiar places and customs for some second or third world country makes no sense unless you’re desperate. There is nothing in Belize that cannot be found in the US and without leaving behind what you have accumulated in a lifetime. Now, if what you have accumulated is crap, that’s a whole other discussion.
I am willing to bet there is not a native in Belize that wouldn’t move to the US tomorrow. And I’ll also bet the ex-patriots are there because they couldn’t make it back home. In short, it’s a do over for misfits.
Tell me I’m wrong.
