Don’t miss hearing about that at the start of every game.

I didn’t know the N.F.L. combine went back that far.

Do you want his statues taken down or do you want a redo of the Civil War?

This isn't the first time I've heard this story. I'm pretty sure it's true.
He also briefly owned a slave. Although it was an inherited slave that he didn't really want, and he freed the slave pretty quickly.

I'm not implying it's false. Reading it, it appears that he was tasked with determining how much an inheritance was along with the other guys.
As far as him owning a slave: it's true. He gained ownership sometime in 1858, and freed him in early 1859. How he gained ownership is questioned, but most lean towards him purchasing the slave from his father-in-law because of his admission to doing so in the legal document freeing the slave (some question this because they don't believe he could afford to buy him), as his father-in-law was adamant about not allowing any slave to be in his control freely because he made it known on several occasions that when he had ownership of any slave he would free them as soon as he could.
It's widely accepted (though not completely proven) that the 4 slaves provided to Grant's wife were never placed into her ownership, but remained in her father's ownership and "loaned" to her because of Grant's promise of freeing any slave the first chance he got.

I've had that for a while. I cannot remember where I found it.

The story I read is that Grant owned one slave that was given to him as a wedding gift from Julia Dent's family. He only freed that slave after going broke as a farmer in St. Louis County. When he appeared at the Old St. Louis Courthouse to manumit the slave he was offered a handsome sum for him which Grant declined. Coincidentally that is the same courthouse where Dred Scott was told to quit complaining and get back to work.
