All of the self driving Ubers here have a backup driver. It is Volvo SUVs out here. You see them everywhere in Scottsdale and Tempe area. I have a coworker that knows the guy that heads up the AZ department of the Uber self driving cars. She just told me that the cars are still in research phase. Every car still has a human driver behind the wheel. They are supposed to be alert and intervene to prevent any accidents. Question is....why didn’t that driver slam on the brakes?

I am all for self-driving cars. But, the software still has a way to go to mimic human safety perception. I drive a fleet truck. We are taught to scan side to side. I would have seen the lady walking way before hand and prepared myself for her to enter the street illegally (think driving defensively). Again, I hope we all have self-driving cars in the future. However, it seems like those cars still are driving too offensively, legal, but offensively.

There was a guy behind the wheel. She likely stepped off the curb right in front of it with no reaction time to stop before hitting her. How many times does this happen to a non-autonomous car? I think this is probably going to be shown not to be the car's fault.

This is autonomous design 101, no one sensor or other source of data used in decision making is allowed be that critical, multiple sensors are integrated in the decision making process, where the loss of one or even several sensors would be of no concern.

3. You can do everything correctly but if someone standing 3 feet from a road randomly walks onto the road, you and the self driving car can still hit them(not saying that's what happened here, just speaking generally)

I'm going to be there one laughing when one of these autonomous vehicles drops a knife wielding bezos devil dog off at your door and kills your entire family then runs over your cat when it's leaving.

So we have a homeless person who was crossing the street outside of the crosswalk in a manner that police say would not have allowed the car to stop.

Exactly. Until AI comes a LOOONNGGG way we won't see true driverless cars. Some neat things will come along as we're developing the tech though.
It just takes a little thought of all the things that can happen while driving to know we're a lot further off than we think.

You know what these idiot robot cars can't do? Context clues. ..a kids bike on The ground. Seeing movement out of the corner of your Eye.
A million things humans do to prevent tragedies like this one robots will never ever be able to do.
