Uber drivers are using fake vomit to charge cleanup fees

A frequent user of the ride-share service Uber is swearing off the company after she says her driver accused her of vomiting in his car to stick her with a $200 cleaning fee, and backed it up with faked photos of the alleged barf.
Meredith Mandel, who works as an art director in Manhattan, says she left a late dinner at the restaurant Roman's in Fort Greene early on the morning of February 21st, accompanied by her boyfriend and a friend, and caught an Uber back to their respective apartments in Williamsburg. She said that the trip ended shortly before 1:30 a.m., no muss, no fuss, but that she awoke in the morning to see a $200 cleaning charge tacked onto her $19 fare in her Paypal account, without any explanation.

She probably blacked out.

With rate cuts all across the country, I am not the least bit surprised at this.

I've made fake vomit before. Mayonnaise, Ketchup, mustard, and cut up some hot dogs for chunkiness. Put it in a plastic bag. You are set.

I would throw up making that.

Most of those drivers don't have commercial insurance and their insurance companies will not pay if you are injured.

And if this actually happened, Uber will refund their charges and fire the driver.
There's no way a driver could get away with this more than once.

I see no reason to believe one over the other here.

Uhhh, while not entirely inaccurate... It leaves out the important fact that while driving passengers Uber drivers are covered by Uber's commercial insurance. Its something they put into place early last year as the lack of commercial insurance was a sticking point in many municipalities they wanted to expand into.
Once the driver accepts a passenger on the app and begins heading to pickup, that driver is then under Uber's commercial insurance.
So yes, the driver probably doesnt have commercial insurance, and their private insurance wont pay for your injuries.... but Uber's will pay for the passengers injuries as well as car repairs for the driver.

What if the car is leased? The lease strictly prohibits commercial use. Good for Uber if they are stepping up on the insurance issue, but the driver will still be screwed because of the lease.

Damn I hope our politicians will protect us by banning uber. For the children.

Better duck because you are about to have the Uber Nazi's in here telling us how great it is anyway and claiming they would much rather pay 125.00 for an Uber ride at peak times after midnight than get a cab on the street or wait an extra 5 minutes for one to show up; bunch of damn sheep.

This same exact thing happened to my friend last year. He noticed the $100 cleaning charge and immediately called/emailed. No one picked up his calls so he traded emails with an uber representative. They said they had proof and sent him the picture the driver had submitted. A reverse image search on google showed that it was the first image on there for vomit in a car. They still refused to refund his money for a while until he saw the $100 put back in to his account. No apology or anything.
My friend rode in that guy's uber a few weeks later as a passenger of someone else.

They charged me 300 when a buddy of mine threw up in the uber, he actually threw up on the back of the driver though so maybe that is an extra 100

As long as the passengers are made whole, who really cares that a sleazy driver gets screwed by their own practices?
