Me and two friends are taking a long road trip from AL next month, to New Mexico/Colorado/Grand Staircase/Grand Canyon/Flagstaff/Las Vegas/Death Valley/Big Sur/San Fransisco (just driving through)/Yosemite then back home via Salt Lake City. We're camping/cooking our own food most of the way - so cool scenic recommendations for tent camping along that route would be appreciated. This is our first time going out west so we're open to suggestions. TIA.

That's like a really really really long route for 2 weeks. San Fran to Salt Lake is about 12 hours of the worst and most miserable terrain you'll ever see.

The mountain (Humphrey's Peak/Snowbowl) in Flagstaff was my favorite part of my I-40 trip. There are trails and shite to drive down and park on when you're going up. One goes damn near around the whole mountain

Yeah, that's a large area to soak in for two short weeks. I did Tahoe, Yosemite, and San Fran in a week.

Did that on a MC a few years ago. Part of my route went through Durango, Ouray,Moab, Canyonland, Escalante, Bryce, Zion and it looked other worldly. I camped one night outside Moab at arches view campground that was across from Dead Horse point. Dead horse is petty unique as well. Once I got to California thee is a little NF campground on the coast close to Big Sur I stopped for the night. If you go into Northern California Richardson Grove campground in the Ave of the Giants area was great. There are just so many places to see out west. You can't see them all. You just have to figure out what is a must see and what you can live without.

Have fun. Planning is half the fun.

I did there and back M-F, and wish I would've had more time. California and Nevada sucked. Texas sucked. San Diego was cool. San Diego to San Antonio was absolutely horrible. I did L.A. to El Paso in one day, and that was the worst part.

Only regret I have was not spending more time in Arizona and heading up to Colorado

Oh, we know what we're getting into. One of my buddies is about to have his first child, so we're kind of doing this for him, since life will be totally different for him in about 4 months. It's like the last chance for a guy road trip so to speak.

I wanted to add, we'll be in a Tahoe, so we're gong to fold down the seat to have an area to sleep where we can rotate drivers and get through the crappy areas of the road trip quickly. We plan on going from AL to Colorado pretty much non-stop.

I hope you aren't planning to drive over Tioga pass in Yosemite. Or camp in Tahoe. There will be a ton of snow in March.

One cool camping spot - Calf Creek Falls in Utah not far from Grand Staircase. I really like the hike to the falls there though they will be a bit chilly. I've done it a couple of times in the summer and a dip feels great then.

Thanks

I'll look into Calf Creek. We're definitely staying the night at Grand Staircase.

If you are staying at Grand Staircase, and want to do that whole trip in 2 weeks then I'd probably skip Calf Creek. It's just too close. And the hike is better than the camping and you really aren't going to have a lot of time for hikes.

Utah is great, though. My favorite place in the world for a road trip. California isn't far behind.

Some advice I can give-check high altitude roads for snow conditions. You may need four wheel drive and/or tire chains if there is snow on the road.
