2 was for the teletype/typewriter days. Now a'days, one is the only way to go, if you're under 90.

Put two if you want. I still do but almost all screen displays and printers use a proportionally spaced font which compresses it to one space.

It's one now. The 2 spaces was a vestige of typewriters where 2 spaces was needed to better break the sentence. On a computer, the program already makes the space large enough that it's not an issue. I learned 2 spaces because I learned to type on a typewriter and sometimes still do it when I'm not thinking.
