I’m a HUGE believer in protecting unpopular speech. My citizenship actually REQUIRES it. Your right to be an insufferable , entitled, racist a-hole Is actually a thing worth protecting. Do you need me to explain why?

neat. so am i .

but this isn't a freedom of speech issue

From government entities? Nothing.

Social consequences? They deserve whatever they get.

I have not seen where a punishment has been proposed. I take that back. The option of offering a fake apology was put out there.

Minimum of 500 hours of community service, minimum.

Yes and no. I was just reacting to the principle of why we have to indulge unpopular speech, even as it offends us. And idiotic racist speech off school grounds shouldn’t be grounds for expulsion imho ( unless threats were made) any more than 100 other idiotic things should. I’d prefer they EDUCATE the idiots through PERSUASION than punishment. It’s the same reason I don’t scream to throw athletes off the team after every minor offense- remembering that adults like teachers and coaches can effect positive change by keeping them IN the fold.

Interesting how some people are so eager to protect hate speech.

We all have our pet causes, I suppose.

Maybe you’re comfortable allowing government to dictate what speech is or isn’t acceptable. But I’m not. Doesn’t mean what these kids said is right or anything hi mg other than reprehensible. But the govern should not have the power to punish them for it.

What you’re not understanding is if the government is allowed to punish them for saying this, that gives government the power to decide what speech is punishable. Do you want to live in that country?

Exactly!

Those “in them there ranks” don’t understand this. Probably never will.

i would completely agree if this was a situation where something was leaked, context is missing, etc.

but these "kids" (they're 17 or 18 year seniors per the article) grew up in the social media, PC age and still decided to film and publish that video. they knew exactly what they were doing and sometimes you have to give people what theyre asking for. also, the teachers and admin shouldn't have to deal with backlash from this.

Why should they have to deal with backlash from this? The kids recorded the video at home, and made no mention of the school or faculty. The school has nothing to do with it at all.

We did. And it was pointed out that all those cases involved threats to other students or faculty.

No, you may want to keep up. Not talking about the past.

Like I said, some don’t grasp this.
