Twitter Will Allow Most Employees To Work From Home Forever

“We've been very thoughtful in how we've approached this from the time we were one of the first companies to move to a work-from-home model,” a Twitter spokesperson told BuzzFeed News. “We'll continue to be, and we'll continue to put the safety of our people and communities first.”
Twitter encouraged its employees to start working from home in early March as the coronavirus began to spread across the US. Several other tech companies did the same, including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon.
That month, Twitter human resources head Jennifer Christie told BuzzFeed News the company would “never probably be the same” in the structure of its work. “People who were reticent to work remotely will find that they really thrive that way,” Christie said. “Managers who didn’t think they could manage teams that were remote will have a different perspective. I do think we won’t go back.”
Dorsey had announced the company's intent to work in a “distributed” way before the virus, but the pandemic forced the company to move the timeline up.
In his email, Dorsey said it’s unlikely Twitter would open its offices before September, and that business travel would be canceled until then as well, with very few exceptions. The company will also cancel all in-person events for the rest of the year, and reassess its plan for 2021 later this year. Finally, Twitter upped its allowance for work from home supplies to $1,000 for all employees.

Time to invest in Google (Meet), Microsoft (Teams) and Zoom stocks? I think this idea will become more and more mainstream for a lot of companies. My wife who works for a large online retail company told me that her Director informed everyone at the weekly team meeting yesterday that the entire Software Engineering team that works on their back end infrastructure could work from home permanently if they wanted.
Just imagine the time saved commuting to work and back, the cost savings from not having to lease and maintain large office buildings...If WeWork being valued at $40B+ never made sense, COVID-19 might just end up driving the final nail in that company's coffin. What an embarrassment for Soft Bank.

Question is going to be how far away can one be? If companies follow Twitter’s lead on this who’s to say that people couldn’t live in the Caribbean on some island or somewhere else in the world?
I’m wondering if they mean the contiguous 48 states or anywhere they want to live in the world.
In theory one could literally travel the world and work wherever they want to as long as they have feasible internet connection
Not to mention, what happens to outside sales and manufacturers reps who have a specific territory? Are in person sales calls going to be a thing of the past if everything is done remotely?

How about time zone difference? They will still expect most employees to be logged in around the same time everyday and be online. Would anyone want to be logged in at night or late evenings or early mornings on a regular basis? That shite can get old pretty quickly.

My manager has already told us we will start working from home the majority of the time. If you need to come to the office you will have to book a desk. No one will have their own office anymore. The new normal.

Good point. But if someone has always wanted to live abroad or Hawaii then maybe this would be their chance to do so if the company approved

Those saying this is the immediate future aren’t factoring in the value in face to face introductions. What about new hires? What about on the job training? What about interns?
Not to mention the level of micromanagement that will inevitably come from permanent WFH for some. I know for a fact who I work for is tracking vpn logins, emails sent/received, IMs sent, and meetings attended. On top the of the usual like web pages hit, along with productivity metrics.

I really don’t see the need to work from an office for a number of jobs. Although there’s a saying, if you can work from home you can work from India.
I work for a tech company. A big one. We don’t think people will return until August. Working from home is ideal when my kids and wife aren’t home. Currently it’s torture. I do way more work in the evening.
