re: Turning the Antenna When the Picture Got Fuzzy

Had relatives in Cenla with the remote turner.
My recollection is that the antenna had to be turned one way to get the Alexandria station(s), then another several clicks to get the Monroe station(s).
By the late 70s, we had a friend whose dad worked on TVs. He had a Zenith with a fricking remote control. Whaaaat?
Looks like that model remote was invented in '56, but it was space age to us in the 70s. He also had a satellite receiver big enough to run a NASA mission.

WAIT WAIT RIGHT THERE. WAIT GO BACK, STOP STOP. HOLD IT RIGHT THERE.
That was my dad yelling through the window at me as I turned the antenna outside. The good old days before cable

When I was a kid I was the antenna turner. I was also my dad's personal remote. He'd look at me and say "Channel 2" or "Channel 9" or "Channel 33". "And while you're up get me a beer." Ah the good old days.
BTW, anybody ever put tin foil around the UHF antenna to get better reception for channel 33?

I remember going out to peoples' houses in the country as a kid and seeing those big satellite dishes thinking, "wow! they must be able to watch anything from around the world."
In the city you only saw those outside of sports bars.

Sucked arse when the pole got bent.
That electric turner always went too far.

How 'bout just old folks, we had one 19" B&W tv with aluminum foil on antenna for premium reception

Yes, I remember by dad yelling directions to me. Also sitting right in front of the TV so I could change channels for him.

Turning the Antenna When the Picture Got FuzzyAnd by antenna I mean the one on the outside of the house.
Not only do I remember doing this ... I did it so many times I still have muscle memory of doing it.
My brothers and I would take turns while our Dad yelled out the window at us.
We all pretty much knew which way to turn the array as to pick-up what station. We lived way out in the country in the middle of the Columbia, Greenville, Augusta triangle so we could pick up stations from all three depending on the weather than day.
You would develop some pretty good forearms turning that sucker and I had one brother who loved to twist the pole one way until the antennae wire was too tight and then the next brother out would have to unwind it counter clockwise which meant going the other way, the left handed way.
Dad had that pole by our house so high we used to joke that we needed aircraft warning lights on top and that antennae took several hits from lightening over the years ... but everyone around the lake was jealous because we got reception from several directions ... it was a 3D Channel Master that was the modern technology bomb of the day. That sucker looked like it belonged on top of an aircraft carrier's command tower.
I vividly remember coming home from college and Dad and my oldest brother had installed a Radio Shack motor so he could turn a dial in the house to adjust the antennae on Saturdays for ballgames.
Edited: "day" to "Dad" and I hate autocorrect

Yeah, and once you got it just right and let go of the antenna, the picture would often go to crap again.

Yep that's exactly it. I can also list expert channel changer on my resume.

I was the tuner. "Go out and turn the antenna real slow. When I say stop...STOP!".

had two channels for the longest so there wasn't much
channel changing going on. The national anthem at midnight
was a given also.

I went through the turn the pole, rain or shine. After a period of time the pole would make a groove in the ground and when I let go, it would move.
My dad thought I was doing it on purpose. I still hear him shouting, move it back a little. NO, A LITTLE!!!!!!!

I 'member getting one of those fancy boxes that was supposed to turn the antenna remotely; but they never worked. Ah, the good 'ol days!!
We had one of those two, but it was relatively late in the game and now I'm not sure if we should have bothered.
I rely on OTA for my cordless setup, and having two antenna in the attic placed on perpendicular planes and the cable output going to a standard splitter/combiner works extremely well.

Grew up in BR with only channel 2 and 9. Aunt/Uncle lived in Sabine parish and had the motorized antenna. It was TV nirvana because they would get broadcasts from Shrevport and Alexandria. Got ABC, too.

I had forgotten about the national anthem and sign off message at midnight...I'll bet I can still recite that message from memory, If I think about it a little!

I lived in the New Orleans area and used a pipe wrench to turn the antenna towards BR so I could watch Buckskin Bill.

The antenna is still on my parents house. I noticed it a while back and offered to take it down and Dad said No, they still use it.
They don't. He has Dementia.

Just the opposite here. Grew up in Baton Rouge and would turn the antenna in order to catch ABC affiliate so I could watch the original Star Trek. There was some local New Orleans based Popeye program we used to watch that had an audience of kids as well.
