And by antenna I mean the one on the outside of the house.

Any of you old country folk remember having to do this? That thread about the Friday night TV shows got me hopping down memory lane and I couldn't remember 70s TV without somebody having to go out and turn the antenna in bad weather.
I 'member getting one of those fancy boxes that was supposed to turn the antenna remotely; but they never worked. Ah, the good 'ol days!!

PS my kids don't believe this was something that actually happened - they think it's a rural legend like walking 2 miles in the snow uphill both ways.

Considering that the three people in my house that watched TV were me, my grandmother and our ancient housekeeper; the problem was probably operator error.

We had this one. I remember the clicking sounds and it lighting up while moving.

That wasn't just an old country thing. All houses had antennas on the roof. I remember climbing up to help my dad take it down after it was obsolete and beat to shite by hurricanes.

That's it! My grandmother was convinced that we could get electrocuted using it. She had no problem with someone putting their hands directly on the aluminum pole, mind you.

We lived way out in the country and I remember it being way more of a problem for us than my cousins that lived in town; but that very well could be my perception. In my mind their houses were the TV holy grail.
My house only got two network channels - no ABC - ever. No Happy Days Laverne & Shirley. Charlie's Angel's. My cousins' got it all. Lucky bastards.

My dad always had the tallest antenna on our street and we had that same controller for the antenna rotator as East Coast Band. That thing took forever and made lots of noise as it moved and then came to a stop. It was the opposite of smooth. Kind of like a big quartz clock's second hand would be, except it stopped clicking, and the antenna stopped moving, when it got to where you set it.

We once had next door neighbor that ran wire over and hooked up to my dad's antenna. It messed our reception up. When my dad went out to see what was wrong, he saw the wire. He got mad and jerked on it thinking it would break off where he'd closed the window down on the wire. His window wasn't closed and my dad pulling on it made the whole rack it was on fall over. The guys wife came over apologizing and I never heard anything else about it.

We STILL have to do this up at our plantation home we had satellite for a few years but weren't up there enough to justify paying for it. So back to the giant antenna we went.

Same here except two girls one boy.
Would turn the antenna and change the channel.
(4, 6, 8, 12)
And don't change the channel too fast you might strip the gears on the knob.

I lived in North Baton Rouge, and as a kid in the late 80's I absolutely remember going and twisting the aluminum pole for the antenna outside the house.

Yep, did that a lot as a kid in the 60's not to mention having to be the channel changer.

My great uncle lived in the country and had the outdoor antenna in the days before satellite/cable. He was a huge Saints/Archie Manning fan.

He would work himself into a lather getting the reception just right for Sunday afternoon games. After he got settled in and really into the action my cousins and I would sneak around and turn his antenna. I think he would have killed us if he were fast enough to catch us.

I went to my grandparents old home last June and the old antennae pole up is still there. I had to turn it many times in my youth.
